Our Sailor called us on Saturday morning but we missed his call...so sad.  Last I heard, they were headed for some relaxing time at some tropical islands!  We received e-mail and in it he mentioned that the reason we hadn't heard is that they have been keeping really busy!  It's taking about 2 - 3 weeks for packages to reach him!  Hang in there, Moms - the deployment is over half way through!

It looks like our sailors will be moving ports when they return from their deployment. Here is an article from the Virginia Pilot - FYI........

Three Hampton Roads-based ships will move to Mayport Naval Station in Jacksonville, Fla., over the next two years, the Navy announced today.

Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus said the first to go will be the New York, an amphibious transport dock ship that will shift homeport late next year. It will be followed in 2014 by the amphibious assault ship Iwo Jima and the Fort McHenry, a dock landing ship. The Fort McHenry is based at Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek; the other two are based at Norfolk Naval Station.

Mabus had said in February that Mayport would get an amphibious ready group by 2015. According to a Navy news release, the accelerated timeline will ensure the health of Mayport’s ship repair industrial base and reduce the risk of man-made or natural disasters in areas where the fleet is concentrated, like Norfolk.

The Navy has long wanted to move an aircraft carrier from Norfolk to Mayport, but Virginia politicians have stymied the move, arguing against the cost of preparing the Florida base to handle a nuclear-powered carrier.

“The move underscores just how important Jacksonville and Naval Station Mayport are to our national defense, and how committed we are to strategic dispersal on the East Coast,” Mabus said.

The Iwo Jima is the largest of the three ships, with a crew of about 1,100 sailors. The New York and Fort McHenry each have a crew of about 360.

There she is the USS New York (LPD 21) and her buddy - the Big E

Bittersweet that it is the Big E last voyage along with the USSNY on her maiden voyage.  May God continue to protect them on this deployment.

Missing my son - having a bad day but am grateful that we got to Skype yesterday that they are finally in a port.  Hoping that at this point they get to catch up on the Mail Delivery - there has to be at least 3-4 care packages waiting him.  This is really disgusting that it takes OVER a month to reach our sailors.  Those poor cookes I made - will go right into the Garbage :(

momoftwosons - I'd love to add you on facebook!  Just message me your name and I'll find you.  I was bummed it got taken offline because that's where I get all my information when I can't talk to my boyfriend.  I figured it had something to do w/ them entering a combat zone.  Thanks for letting me know!

Ashley - I required about it two weeks ago to the ombudesman and she told me that the CO has taken it off line for awhile - with no further explanation.  I know that they passed thru the Suez Canal - which is not an opsec problem in stating such since it was posted in Navy wave and pics were put on FB and that they are now in a combat zone (all previously stated w/the Navy)  if you want to friend me I can try to send you the original posts. I'm also on FB and on the Navy Mom - FB page which is different than this.  I'm actually more FB now myself.

hope this helps - regards

jeanne

Emptynest92 - my boyfriend is on the USS NY and I haven't heard from him since last 5/9. It really does depend on where they are and like others said, lately they are super busy on that ship. Also, when they first deployed, I didn't talk to him for over 2 weeks. Just stay patient and soon as he gets free time, he'll contact you :-)
