Penny, ((hugs))  to you.  I would think that seeing him actually going onto the base would be really hard.

First of all Happy New Year to my N4M family! Wow...I was gone for 24 hours and it took me forever to catch up on my reading! :)

I just got back from Groton...big sigh! Let me tell you it certainly was NOT like when I dropped him off at college! BsProudMom...wow your words could have been taken right out of my mouth! I couldn't go on base so I had to pull over across the street and he called two of his buddies to come meet him and help with his stuff...since we drove he took a little more than what those who flew were able to take. In addition he took his buddies guitar to him...we don't live far from his buddy and so him mom brought it over. So the other 2 guys got to come out and help him...it was nice to see his friend...I haven't seen him since PIR. I could tell he wanted a short and sweet goodbye, but somehow I couldn't make myself leave until I could no longer see them walking! Then I was in such an emotional state that I was kind of driving in circles...even with a GPS! She just kept saying, "RECALCULATING!" I actually think she was starting to sound annoyed! hahaha! It actually was a good 31/2 hour drive...some quiet, reflective me time! I was just walking in the door when I got my first text from N. It said, "Hey..."  I'm so glad that he didn't know I was sobbing while we were texting!

I agree with what everyone was saying about how it is truly different now...even though we can have constant contact with them...they really will never be "home" like they were before. I guess that is the trade off.

@Rose...I was watching the ball drop in Times Square on TV last night and in the corner of the screen I saw quite a group of sailors in their dress blues waving at the TV...could one of them have been your sailor? I ran right up close to the TV to really look at them...funny...I never would have even noticed before!

Well ladies, I have postponed going up to Ns room...I think I need to head up there...get it over with! Sigh...

You all are the best! Thanks for you support!

Penny

Post regarding socks for the kids from the San Francisco group:

Hi everyone!  I posted a message on the Nuke Moms page and had a request from BunkerQueenBee to give some more specifics on this page. The moms were discussing how their sailors had not kept up with their running on leave and I posted a message about the best socks to wear for running or working out.  I am an avid runner and have worked in running retail for 12 years (currently at Fleet Feet Sports in Pleasanton, Ca).  I was shocked by the socks my son was running in for boot camp, cotton tube socks, possibly the worst choice in running socks! Now that our sailors are at A school I believe they can wear their own socks and should get some non-cotton technical running socks. The synthetic fibers in these socks wick moisture away from the foot and keep them from causing blisters in most cases.  These socks also have a higher thread count and fit more snuggly on the foot to avoid and bunching which could also cause blisters.  The socks dry more quickly unlike a cotton fibers.  Highly recommend good running socks for our sailors.  The brands to look for include: Wrightsock, Balega, Features or even Thorlo.  Smartwool also makes a good technical running sock.  Wool is a natural wicking fiber and is very good for exercising.  Another product that is good for the feet is something called Body Glide lotion for the feet.  It goes on like a cream, but feels like powder on the feet.  Again, it is great in preventing blisters and might be good to use while wearing those oh so comfy boots!  You can find the socks an body glide lotion at Fleet Feet Sports, Sports Basement, Sports Authority or at just about any specialty running store.  Great stuff!

((hugs)) Nancy.  My prayers are with IB for safe a journey.

((hugs)) to you too Wendi.

I have found that if I focus on making plans to go see A and have that in the back of my mind, it does seem to help.  Pretty soon, we will all have our own little countdown clocks on our pages.  We can cheer each other on as we get closer to our visits.  :)

Elizabeth, I am right there with you. I m iss my girl eventhough I talk to her a little almost every day. It is tough. I am also trying to figure out when I can go visit.

Elizabeth-I typed out a wonderful response on my phone yesterday right after you posted, and then it got lost when I pushed add comment. LOL And I see that everyone has rallied around you and basically said what I typed originally. We have SUCH an awesome group of women as support.

I am exactly where you are right now (time-wise) and I am finding that it IS getting hard, especially since IB has chosen to spend his time with his dad, so is staying in a different town, therefore; I am not even seeing him. ROAC. I think this is more difficult than BC in that the time duration is a much longer commitment, and while we can talk to them, they are gone for a really long time now. On the other hand, we know from the moms whose kids have gone before ours that there are excellent ways to keep in touch. (And heavens knows, I will probably be in MORE contact with mine in CT than in CA!! LOL) I think that what you are going through is perfectly natural, and that all of us are going through it to some extent (or have already passed through the worst of it) and I don't THINK that we are ALL crazy :-). Again, to reiterate what so many others have said before me...friends who don't have kids in the military just don't get it. I kinda make it a point to not talk to others, even my mom and sister, because they just don't understand.

So, let's make a plan to meet up in Groton for a trip to see our kids with the other Groton moms (I don't know of any wives) and we can see the kids and the sights!! I am already saving up for a spring or summer trip when I am out of school!!

Happy New Year to all ;o)....again I want to thank everyone for their support as I walk through the next phase in my Sailor's journey with the Navy, I've read and re-read your posts about "A" school and the communication you have had with your Sailor's and I keep telling myself while he's in school if I want to send a text or call him I can actually do that...not like BC where you wanted for that random phone call and if you missed it you missed, until the next call if there was a next call.  I also realized that after he "phases in" (I think thats the term) I can go visit him even if its only for a weekend, trust me I have already started checking out flights and hotels in the area :o) gotta have a plan, right?  Ok enough about me and my whoas....I am a Navy Mom and I have a great group of other Navy Mom's that will stand me up when I start to fall down...Love you guys you are all very, very special to me.

Now I want to reply to Mary Sparkle....my heart is breaking for you and J, how awful that at this important phase in you and J's Navy journey that you have to deal with a custody issue not to mention that J really needs to focus on his schooling but instead he is going to be thinking about what this ex-wife is doing to him and his son, shame on her for being so selfish and self centered not to mention the jerk attorney representing her, he or she should be slapped.  Hang in there Mary, J will seek out the right people to help him through this situation and the ex-wife, like Cindy said will EAT HER WORDS.

Happy New Year you wonderful Navy Mom's!

@Betsy...Thank you for the laugh first thing this morning about the Tattoo TOO FUNNY...way to go "A", I know I know...not funny for you at the time :)!!! My E said a lot of them are getting tattoo's right now, he almost got another one too the other day but ran out of time. "What is he getting?" the words "NO REGRETS" on his side!! Hmmmmm?!

@Elizabeth...Please come to this site often and join a chat, I laugh so hard sometimes until I cry ..."husband" hates it (think because I am actually laughing)! Anyway, point being...we are all in the same 'boat' and we understand...GREAT therapy!

@Mary, You and your husband and most of all your son, are in my prayers...I will pray the Navy will see what she is up to and not stand for it, and stand by your husband 110% and make her EAT THOSE WORDS, God knows I wanna ;)

She should be filling their/your son up with "pride" about what his father is doing!! Hang in there!!

((hugs)) and love to all of you!
