you know Dolly, you might right about that. My son is with a squadron which is assigned to the Lincoln, so I don't know a whole lot about the ship stuff. But he kept saying "going on a det" but I thought he was saying "debt" so I asked and that's how he explained it to me.

thanks for the link. I was lucky when my son deployed 2 years ago, he was in a shop with a computer so he could write often. There are computers in the library for the sailors to use, but there is a wait and they have to do it after shift.
they work 12 on, 12 off-at least on deployment they did. I would say that's what it is-busy, tired or the library was busy. Maybe it's not even open on a short underway.

welcome Proud Navy wife and we'd love to have you here too. A boat det is another way of saying "underway", "sea trials" etc. my son explained that "det" means detached from the regular things. When he goes with his squadron away from the base it's called "a det"-in other words, detached from the base.

One word of caution Navy wife and Dolly, we are very concerned about saying when the ship will actually be somewhere. Once it happens, there is no problem discussing it. But OPSEC rules say that we can't discuss future movements of our sailors.
This is for their safety. One thing I was surprised to learn when I joined that all sorts of people monitor this site. that seems hard to believe but it's true.
And I found that out in an interesting way recently:
I googled my project "Heads at Ease" looking for a tv interview that I did last summer. Several things came up and one of them was a recent post that I had put on this website on my page Heads at Ease!!!!!!
That means that was on the internet for all to read. that was an eye opener.

Once the ship is at sea, the sailors are pretty busy and they can't use their cell phone. So email is the only real way to communicate unless they have time to call from the ship's telephones. but there's usually a line.

hope this helps!

Chris A, I think I met your son last week while he was waiting. My husband and I were asking people from the waiting squadron what their positions were and this young man explained that he was a swimmer and explained what they did (small talk while waiting). I kept looking at how nice his teeth were (only a mom that paid big $$ for braces would notice this) and it looks just like your swimmer's picture you have posted below (the lower half of the picture) :)

I had a copy of bc and a certificate from the hospital I was born at with a raised seal, but neither was acceptable. believe me, I tried to argue the case, but they wouldn't accept it. I actually bought 2 copies to keep one in case I didn't get the other back, but I did.
we went to the PO to get ours. not all branches do that, so check that out. we had to have an appointment to complete the information.

Cathy's right, get that official bc. go online to your state and follow the links. For WI I did have to write a snail mail letter casue they would only take checks or money orders.
We got ours in the winter thinking the same thing about vacation time. It cost around $100 2 years ago, plus photos, plus $20 for me to get bc.

But what a peace of mind I had knowing if I needed to go in an emergency, I was ready,

Chris, a rescue swimmer! awesome. Linda, I with you -never was a good swimmer.

we got our photos at Walgreens. I didn't hve an original birth certificate. So I had to write to my state and get a certififed copy. That took about a month. and I had to pay for it. That's why I suggest get a start on it.
Mine took about 2 months, hubby's about a month, but we had his original.

congrats to them. I heard it was their 1st time there and then to win! exciting.

we figured we wanted to be prepared in the off chance that it would be needed. although our son was married at the time, we felt a need to be prepared. so glad that we didn't need it.

you are welcome. and since it does take some time to get them, it's a good idea to get started.

oh and I love all the pictures. my son is only onboard when his squadron is, but I call the Lincoln "my ship". I guess cause I got to spend some time on her.

when the Lincoln deployed in March 2008, we stood on the dock and watched the ship until it rounded the corner going out of Cornado Island. I wanted to drive down the island on the ocean side, but hubby thought I was nuts, cause it was opposite the way home. they didn't pull out until 5 pm.
my son stayed up top for a long time, until he finally had to go down. that's when I finally cried. it was so hard to think that I wouldn't see him for 7 months. and he lived in VA so it wasn't liek I saw him more than 1 or 2 times a year anyway, but the thought that he would be half a world away was a big thing to experience. At least in VA I could hop a plane and be there in a half a day. not so on the ship.
Which reminds me, moms do you have a passport? We got ours when we knew he was deploying for "just in case". He was married, but we are the parents. Thankful that we didn't have to use them.
