Sue,
I'm in Los Angeles so San Diego would be wonderful to see them off. I would travel to Everett to see them off also, it would be important to me if I would not see my son for seven months. I'm hoping there will be some advance warning of their ports of call on the west coast. Is San Diego a general stop over when heading out on deployment?

Carmina,
I guess that depends on where you live and the homeport. When the Lincoln deployed in March 2008, the ship picked up my son's squadron in San Diego. So we drove over to see it off. I was surprised that more people weren't there, but SD is not it's homeport.
If you are able, go see it off. I watched that ship until it turned and headed out to sea. and I also realized that I wouldn't see my son for another 7 months.

Cathy,
I love Navyformoms because it has helped me so much to understand what is happening in my son's new life (especially in Boot Camp). Navyformoms helps us all help each other. Cathy, I know that my son didn't care for Washington when he arrived and was very sad for several weeks, so I think Joey didn't want Marty to feel that way. Joey did tell me that their Sponsor was very busy and this would help him out too. I relayed how appreciative you where.
LIfe if going to be very different for all of them very soon when they go back to their homeport. I'm really wondering right now what family members do when their ship goes on deployment? Do family members go to see it off?

Cathy,
It was 2:00 am this morning when I got a text from Joey saying, that he picked up Marty and he was home. So, Marty should be on the barge now, but I jjust remembered that Joey never got cell phone reception on the barge, the ship and certain areas of this base. Joey would walk to a McDonald's on the base to make phone calls. So if you don't hear from him until tonight, you will know why.

Cathy,
I just told Joey of Marty's estimated schedule to arrive in Bremerton and he said for you to give him his telephone number. E-mail me at: troycarmina@yahoo.com, so the kids can connect tonight. Joey said he doesn't work in the morning, so he will pick him up and take him into the base and on the barge.

Hi Cathy,

Did Marty's sponsor arrange to have him picked up or is he getting to Bremerton via shuttle? It takes a good hour to get from SEATAC airport to Bremerton. My husband just reminded me that all of his luggage may not arrive on time since he had so many connections.

Cathy,
Marty had to report to Everett and not Bremerton? Have you heard from him yet? I don't know if Joey was checking his e-mails since I told him that Marty was getting a ride. Joey has been working evenings, so he is at work already and not sure what time he is getting off. Is someone picking him up or is he taking the Kitsap Airporter? I think the last Kitsap Airporter leaves at midniight. Let me know if he calls you and needs help.

Cathy,
I can only imagine how wonderful you all felt for Marty's homecoming, enjoy!
Cathy, I was telling my son that Marty would be arriving soon to the Lincoln and he said that his sponsor would be in contact with him, but he would like to pick Marty up at the Kitsap Airporter drop-off point in Bremerton (which is a Union 76 gas station). Joey (my son) asked that Marty contact him with his phone number. I told my son that this would probably make you feel better too. Have Marty e-mail him at joeygamador@gmail.com and my son will call him back.
Have fun this week

Cathy,
How wonderful that you get to see your son on Thursday. Enjoy your time with him while he's home, the time goes by very fast. I was going to have my son look out for your son when he arrived, but my son has been working evenings lately. Cathy, one thing that I didn't know when my son had to report to the Lincoln was that there is a sponsor that your son has to contact prior to leaving for the Lincoln. His sponsor will tell him where to go and how to get to the ship. My son was told to take the Kitsap Airporter (a shuttle with drop-off and pick-up points) to the Bremerton base. The Kitsap Airport if fine if you don't have two very full seabags with you and you have to walk a block or two to get to the front gate of the Bremerton base. Luckly a women that got off with my son took pitty on him and drove him to the front gate. A small important technicality that was not discussed. I'm not sure if your son's sponsor will pick him up or not, but I feel it's important to know. FYI - This week it seems like the weather in Bremerton has turned to 50 degrees and rainy, so make sure your son takes some warmer civilian clothes with him. I'm sure that the warmer summer days are going to be further and further apart now.

the sailors are told to travel in groups, pairs at least while in a foreign port, no uniforms or patriotic shirts, as they don't want attention called to them.

as far as mail goes, it depends on where they are. For my son, the 1st mail drop was 1 month into deployment in Sinapore. He's with a squadron. He did say that the ship's crew got mail once before that-probably in Hawaii.
That 1st box had peach muffins in it which arrived moldy. That is how the Heads at Ease pillowcase project was born.

I am quirky. I tracked on a calender when I sent the box and when he received it. The fastest was 5 days when they were in the Persian Gulf. And that's because they were close to a base in Iraq. the longest was the last. I mailed a box on 8-30 and he received it on 10-3, when I was on the ship! That was funny.
But it was an average of 10 days to 2 weeks.
