Darlene, my son just finished up a 10 day leave that began May 20th. He graduated A school March 23rd so he had a two month hold before he could take leave and come home. He is now in C school in Dam Neck, VA so I will be leaving this great group.  The Navy paid for his flight to Dam Neck and he was responsible for the difference to fly into Greensboro, NC and they take that out of their accounts. Your son has been accruing leave time since he started boot camp so that should not be an issue. The Navy has a program that the sailors can participate in between school and deployment that allows them to work for 5 consecutive days at the Recruiting Office they were recruited from and it does not count as leave even though they are home. Might be something for your sailor to look into.  The travel agency on base makes all flight arrangements so after your son receives his written orders, he may just want to stay on top of that.  My son still did not have his reservations made 5 days before he was supposed to leave so he had to remind them he was flying out.  Good luck to you and your son.

Has anyone traveled to see their sailor while at A school? Any suggestions on where to stay that is closer to downtown Chicago?

no i am prepared for that,he said by next week they are supposed to get orders...but i am not counting on it...i figure might be home by july??  does his time for leave start counting after he graduates?  even if he can't come  home because he waiting on orders? not sure if that makes sense??

Comment by Anti M on May 31, 2014 at 10:48pm

Does he have his orders yet?  They will not let him come home until he has orders in hand, be prepared for him to have a short hold if he needs to wait.  They will not let him wait for orders at home because they will want to check him out of Great Lakes completely.  Don't want you to be surprised or disappointed (or book stuff he will miss).

Thanks

You cannot book the flight, the base travel office(SATO)  takes care of that.  He only pays for the leg of the trip to come home on leave.  Leave it to the Navy.

There are a number of A schools at Great Lakes, so you must specify which rating.

My Daughter is also starting A school next week not sure of the date but she did say next week, maybe they are starting the same time.
