Sub sailors (SECF) go to Groton, all nukes have school in Goose Creek, SC.  A few ratings go to ATT (electronic prep school) in Great Lakes, then continue on to San Diego.  Corpsmen and MA go to TX, and there's a school in Mississippi which I think is for logistic specialists/yeomen.

Thanks so much for the information Forever proud! I believe I'll get to spend more time with him PIR weekend now that he won't be leaving the area right away. He said he expects to be there about 200 days. Thank You again.

Mariecb congrats on the assignment! Norfolk is one of the places my son opted for, but he is only a couple of weeks into BECC, so no idea if he will actually get it. Gorgeous area to be! he should be very happy there, and you will enjoy visiting him.

Also Marilyn, Great Lakes is where A school is for certain ratings. My son is MM (Machinist Mate). Nukes mostly go to Groton CT for A school, Aviation rates mostly to Pensacola, Culinary go to Virgina, etc, so your sailor staying in Great Lakes just means that is where the school is for the job he signed up for.

Welcome NickSmom and Marilyn! My son I'd about half way through his adventure here, so I have SOME answers to your questions. Marilyn - hold is when the new sailors have to wait for enough people with their rating to come over from RTC to form a class. Sort of like P days in boot camp. My son was on hold for about two months before his classes started. During that time, they have a lot of free time and get fairly bored, as they have a lot more freedom, but not enough to really get into anything fun. They will be on watch rotation, and they do a lot of cleaning, but they can also leave base in groups to go to movies or out to eat. No one has transportation, so they have to share cabs or take the train to get around.

Can someone tell me what a hold is? Thanks

armymomnavyson - I love your name - I was in the Army too.  I have been reading that the USS Theodore Roosevelt is going to be moved from Norfolk to San Diego next year so my son will get to experience both coasts and so will we.  That is exciting.  Thanks for your congrats and support.  My best to your son and your family!

Congrats to your son mariecb! My son has just started his A school. He is also an MM. He will be held back a few days because he is getting his wisdom teeth out next week. We are from the Chicago area and have enjoyed having him home most weekends so I know what you mean! I'm hoping for Norfolk since it's closest :) my best to you and your son!!
