Kathleen - so funny!  We ate at GoJo's in May at our first son's PIR - love love love their shakes and sundays!  Amazing late night snacks.  We are returning for our oldest son's PIR next Friday and plan to go to downtown Chicago to Uno Pizzeria for traditional Chicago Pizza at his request -  As far as liberty - our plan (worked great first time through) is to take 2 buddies along into town on our last day, do some shopping and eating, then drop all 3 sailors to the train station to make their way back to the base while we head to the airport. That way we get the most time together.

They can't have cars on base.

i support the rules and regs of the navy, it's just going to be hard on them.  we leave at the butt crack of dawn on sunday so she won't be able to leave base as he can't drive to go get her (no license).

any idea when she'll be able to drive?  i know it take awhile to get the live a shore done but can she bring the car on base so she (and a liberty buddy) can go off base during liberty?

Spouses can be liberty buddies, but yes, he has to be there when she checks in and out.

@duh - when she gets Phase 2 she might be able to get her husband approved as her liberty buddy, so he could pick her up & take her home?

duhhuh...yes, still lots of rules throughout A school. There is a method to all this, however, and a good one I think. Think about it. The Navy has put forth the effort during bootcamp to establish a new way of thinking for these sailors...team work...and a lot of discipline in all areas. All this is still new and fresh in their minds and without good reminders and reinforcement, it would be very easy for some sailors to slip back into old habits. Not talking about getting into trouble...just sticking with structure. Some rules are of course for their safety, as the Navy doesn't want anyting to happen to them as well.

Best to show you support everything the Navy asks of your sailor. If we show signs of being disappointed or that we think something is a bummer or unfair, (or telling them "it sucks"), we are only setting our sailors up to feel bad and perhaps try to get around rules and get into trouble. This is a whole new way of life for our sailors and all their loved ones...but a good one when we learn to let go.

oh, that's going to suck.  that mean's she won't be able to go "home" on liberty

@duh - I don't think she can take a cab by herself, due to "liberty buddy" rules? Angie?

He can have those things as soon as he has checked into his new barracks.  He'll do that Friday afternoon, and you will spend the evening with him. He can take them back that night when he goes back for curfew.  Get a plain black bag to put them in, something small and light, if he has to change rooms later, he has to carry everything by himself.  He can take you to the NEX, they usually have plain bags he can carry in uniform there.
