Bobbie, my son was headed to Corpsman Hospital Medic A School so yours may be different ...the Corpsman are going to San Antonio, Tx. now....so it may be totally diff. situation for your son, but they told my son that he would NOT be able to stay overnight with his parents but I read on NAVY moms that it did happen that they were granted liberty to stay the entire weekend with the parents! We rented a suite @ Springhill Suites by Marriott (a very GOOD choice) that had a livingroom area & lots of room...we did this just in case he could spend the night!!! He did!! but we did NOT find this out until we picked him up late that afternoon after PIR...so just be prepared! All of them did not get to do what my son did, but I was so glad that we were prepared for him being with us!
Remember also, what ever they take to A School has to fit in their Seabag when they leave! My son was able to get Leave & come home for Memorial Day Weekend, so he took an empty suitcase back with him so he would not have to walk a couple of miles with any excess stuff to MAIL home at the Post Office! He did have room in his dorm "Ship" to sore his suitcase! We probably could have left an extra suitcase after PIR???
Hope some of this helps?
Bobbie>> my son graduated Boot Camp in March, he was Grad & Go. Right after PIR he had to go and move his stuff to the Corpsman A School Dorms, he had to go through an orientation for the new rules, etc. That took until 4 to 5pm, he called and we picked him up at the Gate ( we actually picked him up at the Train Station, his dorm was right beside it) He stayed with us the entire weekend, he had to be back late that Sunday Night) He took his cell phone, lap top, I Pod, etc with him. He kept some of his civilian clothes with him also. We had to mail him more civilian clothes/shoes/belts... They can wear them as time goes on: they have to earn the privilege! I don't have a clue what it will be like for your son, they change things often & lots of thing depend on their commanders and how they do things. I think some parents can't stay after graduation with them until their A School starts....so they look for a place to store their stuff a couple of days??? just don't know for sure about all that...keep asking questions, your son will let you know but it may be the last minute, so keep reading & just be prepared! We had planned to leave him at the gate that Sunday Night by 7pm like we had been told & had read, BUT he did not have to check into his dorm until 9:45pm that night for Corpsman A School, so it was a very good thing that we had reserved our hotel through Sunday night! We added another night to our stay since we could spend another few hours with him! He was able to wash his fatigues (sp?) & get everything reorganized & packed up!
We left that Monday morning instead. It was so well worth it!
