Tiff'sMom...I did see Tiff's pic on the TSC FB page. I can imagine it was both an exciting and emotional experience for her. But how wonderful that she got to participate. I guess it was a really special feeling for both the sailors and the vets alike. I always enjoy the pics that the TSC posts, as well as all the one's you post on your FB page!

HARP is different than RAP duty.  HARP is a set of orders and they are paid a bit, RAP is when they are home and can be five days maximum.  I get them confused to this day.  Also, they cannot combine RAP and holiday leave.   There's tons of info on it around the internet.

Have any of your kids been able to participate in the Honor Flight?  Tiffany has done two now... last night she said the lady she escorted was a WWII Vet from the Marines... They posted the pics on the TSC FB webpage, my girl is the one without all the medals on her shirt :)  and glasses, she said it makes her choke up... then the night before that, she was able to go to a IA homecoming at the airport, he had been deployed for over a year, I think, she that really choked her up too, the guy had two teens and she said what looked like a 5 year old... When you look at the FB pages it's so cool seeing all the Vets :)

Pam,

Tell you what, you visit mine in Great Lakes and I'll take yours in here! LOL

Sandy -

kinda figured it still worked that way! (Hubby retired 20+ in the Navy and I did 10 in Air Force).  They call always try for HARP duty (recruiter assistance) to not burn too much leave while they are home....

Patty, they would prefer it if they took leave during Stand Down but they don't have to. I have heard that there are some Sailors who stay at GL during Christmas

patty,  we live in Illinois, that's why it was so nice that my son's A school was at Great Lakes we got to see him most weekends.  But now he is in Va for his C school and then he will be off to San Diego.

Pam -

Where is home for you?  I'm in VA!  Looking forward to THAT stretch of my son's training!

Sandy -

Thanks for the info on Christmas stand down, guessing they still make them take leave for those days, right?

TinaZmom, Christmas Stand Down is usually 14 to 15 days. Great Lakes never posts the dates until about a month before. You should hear around October, November.

Just got back from my last trip to Great Lakes, my son grad. his A school on Friday and flew out to Va last night.  It was hard to say goodby.  There was us and a few other families at grad. and they gave us certs for supporting our sailors.  My son has already gone to the beach he was sending us pictures all day.

Just in case any of you don"t know, when you take your sailor to the airport you can get a gate pass so you can go to the gate with them.
