Toni, Welcome to the group. It is good to have you.

Debbie, I am so sorry about your son. My oldest grandson is going into the Marines this fall and like your son, that's all he has been talking about for the past year. It is what gave him the encouragement to do well in school this past year. So I do realize how tough this is for your son. I hope that this is a temporary setback. I'm sure Hoppi or Will can give you a better perspective on what is going on.

Laura, I don't know where you are in schooling but I agree with Will ... concentrate on that now. It will accomplish something and will occupy your time.

You said you have four years crushed. Oh, I wouldn't take it so hard. His schooling will be over before long ... perhaps longer than you would like ... but it won't be long. Then you can, if you wish get married and you can follow him around. To expect that he is going to return to Georgia and be in the Navy is not realistic. Even if you lived in the Norfolk area, it is not realistic to expect that he would spend four years there.

My mom gave up college permanently to become a Navy wife, following my Dad hither and yon. My sister gave up college for 20 years to follow my BIL hither and yon. and my SIL gave up college for almost 20 years to follow my brother hither and yon. Only my BIL was stationed briefly near my sister's "home." I put home in quotes because really we had a moving home.

If your career is a portable one, e.g., nursing, teaching, etc., and you are relatively close to finishing, I would recommend finishing college first.

A long distance relationship is hard but it is doable. Will's example is a good one. It does take work, patience and understanding. I wish you well.

Vee, let's not get into ancient right now. Remember you can be young at heart and you sound like you are!

Hey there, Melanie.....2 more days or when is his plane getting in? I am so excited for you; it's like it is happening to me. Nice advice for Laura...between all of us, we'll get her through this. She is young (like we all were ONCE) and this is all very new and strange to her. So, I hope she will have the patience we are trying to instill in her.....Talk to you soon.....
