You can drive your sailor back onto the base as long as your sailor is in the car, everyone in the car has to have their drivers license, (i.d.) and you have your registration and proof of insurance (they didn't always ask for the proof of insurance).  You can not drive onto the base if your sailor is not in the car.  Also you must "sign him out" at his ship before you can take them.

ncdeb, we attended PIR for our sailor on June 2nd.  After much thought we decided to attend Sarge's Meet and Greet.  It was a lot of fun, and I met many of the moms on this site.  We put our Navy for moms name underneath our real name, so that we recognized each other.  If you go make sure that you stay to the end.  He has a lot of info about PIR.  We stayed at the Holiday Inn Express in Waukegan.  They had a free shuttle to PIR and back, and it is located nice and close to the base, also the Meet and Greet.  Hope this helps.

Try to go to Sarge's Meet and Greet.  He has a lot of information.  Plus you will get a chance to meet other families in your daughter's division.  It has been almost 2 years since my son's PIR and I still remember the helpful information from Sarge. The food was good and it was fun too.

I hear really good things about the meet n greet.  I vote yes!

Wow thanks so much Allison, Pooter527 and Anit M! I just had it in my mind she would be staying with us at the hotel. She's not worried so not sure why I am, lol. I just like to know what to expect. Would you guys recommend going to Sarge's meet and greet the day before?

Also, parking in Chicago is expensive, and can be difficult.

You are all correct, no overnight liberty.  Have them back early, it takes time to walk back to the barracks.  The good news is they get released fairly early in the morning on Saturday and Sunday.

The check in varies, so hopefully it will be a couple hours instead of five!  They have to check in, stow their gear, and attend a briefing on base and liberty rules.

My son's training is also on base. She will have liberty the day of graduation, once she moves into her new barracks. Apparently that can take up to 5 hrs. Hopefully it won't. Then she is allowed off base but has to be back by curfew. Same for sat. and Sunday. That's what I told.

I guess I can't say recruit. She'll be a sailor at this point :D
Comment by Allison on June 29, 2017 at 9:53am
ncdeb unfortunately, after PIR, all recruits have to be back by 9pm all weekend if I remember correctly, so she will not be able to stay the night. However, there's actually a lot of fun stuff to do close by and good places to eat even though it doesn't look like it, so you'll be able to maximize your time together. If you do want to go into Chicago, I recommend paying the extra for a cab or parking if you'll have a car because the train ride can take an hour and half, whereas if you travel during the right times, the drive to and from Chicago can be as short as half an hour.
