The visitors center is outside the TSC gate. Take the shuttle back to the hotel and relax for a while. It will be several hours before your Sailor will have liberty. Answer any phone call coming in from 1pm on. Chances are it will be closer to 3pm before that phone call comes, but you can always go to the visitor center early and look around.

The Sailors from each ship march to the gate when ready for liberty, as long as weather permits. It's amazing to listen to a cadence start way off in the distance, and hear them get closer to the gate.

If you have received your phone call saying your Sailor is ready to leave, and you hear a group starting up in the distance, the anticipation that your Sailor might be in the group on their way to the gate is almost as grand as watching that garage door open at PIR. :)

Thank you everyone.  We were planning on taking a shuttle to PIR,  Are we able to come back to the visitors center after we leave?  Or should we bring our car to PIR?

Bandmom, He will be move and check in on his new ship. Then they have to go over rules and expectations. They are not allowed to have their phone until you pick them up, Although some did take their phones with them after PIR with the risk of losing liberty. My son called from a rommates phone to let us know he was ready to be picked up. It was close to 4pm by the time he got in our car. And back by 9pm. But the rest of the weekend we had him from 5am-9pm.

PS We were not able to give our son his phone until after we picked him up after checking into A school.

Has anyone prepared you all for how it goes at A school?

Since your son is going to A school there, go to the visitors center at the A school base to pick him up.  It was around 3pm before our son met back up with us after PIR. The new sailors walk together to the Visitors Center so you can just wait for him there.

Bandmom, once he is checked in to his new "ship", he'll be able to meet you at the visitor's center and you can give him his phone then.  But not until after PIR and he's been checked in and released for Liberty.  Because they are moving to the training side of the base, and depending on how many are moving over there, and there will be plenty, will depend on how long it takes...2 hours and on I suppose. When my son switched to the training side it took about 4 hours but there were a lot in his PIR.  But he'll be able to call you to let you know when to meet him.  But stay close just in case.

Bandmom my son was done by 4pm depending on how many and what else needs to be done.  He can have his phone after you pick him up. They will let him call you to pick him up from base.

My son is going to A School in Great Lakes, I know that he will have to check in after  PIR, so we will have to come and pick him up after he is checked in.  We will be able to give him his phone so that he can call us when ready?  Approx. how long does check in take?

When an entire ship changes homeport, they will have intercultural classes for everyone, including family members.  That's one thing Fleet and Family Services does, make sure folks know about their new host country.

Japan in summer is hot and humid, and is also typhoon season. It is the only time you can hike Mt. Fuji though.   I loved October in Japan, or springtime, when the cherry blossoms bloom.  Expect some rain whenever you go.  Japan has six seasons, four involve rain.  Winter, spring, rainy spring, summer, rainy summer (typhoon season), autumn.  It rains less in fall.

AntiM, thank you for the information.  My son will be joining his ship in San Diego and his ship will be repositioned to Yokosuka in the fall.  He is single so he doesn't have to worry about moving a family, but I am wondering how they orientate the whole ship.  He is very excited and Japan was his first choice.  We are making plans to visit next summer.
