Anti M......thanks so much for the info.  It makes sense, however unfortunate the news is!  But like I told my daughter.....don't stress about this, remember you are still getting a paycheck, and to keep her hopes up.  She has always been such a go-getter, and has little patience!  I guess her number one lesson to learn about being in the military is "hurry up and wait".

The recruiting quotas are set based on manning levels years in advance.  There is an expected drop rate for boot camp, for school, and even in the fleet (academics, PFA, discipline, etc).  They also project advancement and re-enlistment, retention has soared past estimated projections.  More qualified recruits mean fewer drops in BC and school. The problem is, they NEED the junior paygrades in certain rates, so they need to keep bringing in the fresh recruits.  With more senior sailors staying in droves, overmanning happens.

Also, the training pipeline can back up for numerous reasons, from lack of qualified instructors to a building losing the furnace in winter.  Nuke prototype is especially bad, if anythign happens with the nuclear reactor, training hits a standstill.

It is a complicated equation, one which requires a long, over-arching view.

I was on hold at Great Lakes, stayed there nearly 18 months, and that was 30 years ago.

ugh, he was under the impression that this one was short (2 months)...then on to C school (hoping here close to home in VA!).  Sandy - over a year????  What in the world...seems a waste of money/time/etc to have them sit (and forget what they learn)!  Why make them wait to enter until they have a confirmed job then?

Thanks for the info!  Guess we'll all get to know each other pretty well!

Patty....my daughter is also FC, PIR 6/17.  From what I have been seeing and reading, they may be there for at least a year, maybe 18 months.  >:-(

I'm surprised they keep taking in so many when they don't have the space in school for them.  ?

Patty22407,  My son is a FC. He graduated from (A)school May 6th, of this year. He is still at GL on hold. His PIR was 8/6/10. So from entering boot camp till now he has been at GL for over a year so far.

FC? At least a year.

Okay, I've read a lot of conflicting info.  My son PIR'd 6/17, and is waiting to class up for FC school (originally ET, but that's 140% staffed).  How long can he expect to be at Great Lakes?

Thanks so much - I feel lost, and we are a military family!

Good Morning all I just wanted to give a heads up on fb they posted pictures of the PIR(not from BC) that took place yesterday.  It sounds like something they do once a year but not sure since this is my first...but my son who is in A school said they were part of it so you may want to check it out some good pictures.

I posted a lot of pics on FB sorry, ProudGMBarb LOL  Hisbeloved.. we went to the Navy Pier for bc grad too... but it was cold and rainey, it was nice going in the weather this time around! :) It was also nice going without my EX! LOL  He totally cramped our style while we were there during BC graduation.  Granted it is their dad, but they do not have a lot to do with him and this go around, he didn't know we went for her A school grad! LOL  He didn't even bother to send her a card for her birthday :(  JERK... thank goodness they grow up and realize who is who and who really cares! :)
