I always locked my seabag with a padlock. It is a hassle, but it can be done. I never send an unlocked bag through, which means cut locks if you're traveling overseas and lose your bag (mine all went to Amsterdam one trip from Tokyo). Even in these days of high security, there are baggage handlers who steal from unlocked bags. Even small luggage locks stop casual theft.

I hope the bag turns up soon!

Boy Kellyt, do I agree with you

Hi All;
I just got back from 3 days in Southern California. It was 76 there yesterday. What a shock when I got home to 40 degrees and cold, wet, San Joaquin Valley Fog! Yuck, but the sun in So Cal was wonderful.

Here in Southern Mississippi, it's about 32 degrees this morning. We've been at 18-20 each night and expecting snow, sleet, wintry mix for Thursday, Friday and Saturday with lows about 14 and highs at 25.

Kelly: I hope they find Jake's bag soon. Don't know if you purchased rental/property insurance on him for GL, but Tyler's policy pays for seabag and contents if lost. Same policy will follow him throughout his Navy career wherever he is stationed.

Muster times do vary. You always muster more on duty days, and less in the fleet!
Comment by Anti M on January 5, 2010 at 2:15pm
Muster is usually held in the morning, then at school, then after lunch, after school, and sometimes at night before lights out. Basically a head count, so no one sneaks off. Every day, although less on the weekends, unless you have duty. Liberty weekend, not so much. The school and the ship each hold their own musters, because a ship muster would be different individuals than a class muster. You stand in ranks and answer up when your name is called. The uniform is whatever they're required to wear that day. Even on our duty weekends, we had to be in complete uniform. It seems like a lot of fuss, but it is no worse than taking attendance in high school, just done the Navy way.

I once wrote up one of my sailors because she insisted on wearing purple socks and purple barrettes. She was angry because she was a fleet returnee. She was still an E-3 and I was still and E-4, I didn't care what she'd done in the fleet, my troops were to be in uniform, no exceptions. The next morning she missed muster to "show me". She also ticked off two other POs that day, my supervisors. They wrote her up too, for missing muster and for insubordination The Navy decided she didn't need to go to ET school after all.

Duty can be many things. Basically, keeping spaces and the base secure, and in the fleet, having a warm body on hand to watch for trouble or problems. As an ET I stood watch so if the gear broke, either I could fix it, or call in someone else who'd been trained on it. The sailors checking IDs are on duty.

Hey, I found this on Facebook adn got a laugh from it:

Naval Station Great Lakes Attention single Sailors: "How not to marry a Jerk(ette)" classes, 19-22 Jan, 0900-1100 at USS Decatur (Ship 839). Open to all military personnel E5 and below. Students call 688-7563; staff call 688-5610. Four days now saves lawyer fees later...

I hope no one takes offense, but I sure could have used that with my first sailor hubby!

One day of duty every four days. There are four sections and they rotate. I know they've changes the weekend policy, so I can't say what it is now,I dont' know for sure. He may stand a watch or do other things he's assigned. A lot of standby and mustering on duty days.

muster = roll call in uniform

SCE, hold is pretty much like a 7 to 5 job (or so) with duty every four days. He cannot leave the base on his duty days. Liberty is normal time off, evenings and weekends for the most part. Now if he or his division messes up, they can take away his liberty, but that isn't usual. Once he settles into NTC side of Great Lakes (school side), he can learn his schedule and get an idea of how much free time he will have. I think they may only stay offbase overnight for the weekend in phase two, but I am not certain. I do know they cannot stay overnight on a week night.

SCE, yes you may visit during the hold, but he'll have more time off once he gets past phase one for liberty.
