Dawn, my brother was stationed in Japan when his children were little. Two of them started grade school in a Japanese school and one was born there. The older son, also Matt, completely fell in love with Japan and did a year of study there while in college. He ended up marrying a Japanese girl and they have lived both in the US and in Japan. He is now an airline pilot and hopes to someday fly with JAL so he can once again live in Japan. He has become fluent in Japanese and his daughter is being reared as bi-lingual.

I hope your Matt loves it there as well. Do plan to save your pennies to go for a visit! Get your passport in order so you will be ready.

Good Morning all - I took the day off yesterday, but want to thank all of you who posted information about POV. I am going to talk with Michael about it today..so wish me luck.

Will - you have a great day, too! I hope it isn't "one of those Mondays."

Gary T...I just know that Nick is going to class up real soon. And, how great is it that you have that pass until September. Now, you won't be able to hassle them at the gate any more. LOL LOL

Bill - you are too funny! I will be on pins and needles for you hoping that Brett gets one of his dream list choices. Be sure to let us know right away. Then you all can support me around the first couple of weeks in September when Michael should be getting his orders. He is set to graduate A school around mid-September.

Dawn - Congrats on Matt graduation from A school. Enjoy each minute of your time with him when he is home on leave. He will love Japan just like Anti M did.

Have a great day all.....

dawn, have you joined the Japan moms yet?

I lived in Yokosuka for 12 years. Twice on my own set of orders and then as a dependent wife. I love Japan. If you get me started , I won't shut up about it.

I knew sailors in San Diego who would take the cars they just bought to security for a drug dog sweep. Ah, California.

My son while at bc didn't have a car, nor at school in Pensacola. When he got orders to Norfolk, he took his car. One caution--when he was out on sea trials, he had to make sure he was parked in the right lot or it would be towed. While deployed, he left the car at a trusted buddy's house. That would have been fine except that another sailor "borrowed" his car without anyone knowing when the buddy was gone. I started getting parking tickets from NYC because the car was in my name also, which was a good thing at the time. My son had wondered why his high performance clutch was burned out. Because it was also in my name, I could call the police and contact the Navy to track down who took the car. It would have been almost impossible for my son even though he had returned. I ended up finding out who the sailor was, contacting his ship's CO who passed everything to legal. I had payments for tickets and brakes within days and luckily for the sailor I decided not to press charges though I was told I could. I figured some kid had learned a hard enough lesson because I'm sure his officers weren't easy on him.

When I lived in Ireland on sabbatical, there was another American professor on sabbatical as well. He purchased a car for the year; however, at the time of purchase, the car company agreed to purchase it back. They even agreed on a price, subject to no damage, of course. Now if the students could work out a deal like this, i might not be too bad. Otherwise, they could get taken to the cleaners.

My husband and I decided that public transportation, the good will of others, and our feet was just fine. We were amazed how much we saved by not having a car.

Debbie, you mention "wants" vs. "needs." Being a former economics professor, I used to have that in some of my lectures. I used our older son as an example. He drove an old clunker and told me he "needed" a CB radio in case it broke down. I told him he "wanted" a CB but didn't need it. Sure enough he bought one. Then I was going to borrow his car to drive from Columbus, OH, to West Lafayette, IN. I looked at the tires and they were worn through. Four tires later, I was ready to head out when I noticed this wire dangling down. Upon questioning it, he told me it went to his CB and that his foot had caught it. He assured me I didn't need it. So what I would tell my students was that the new tires were a need for safety reasons but the CB was definitely a want. Dear son was willing to send me out with bald tires and no CB to call for help!

Vee, Could you suggest to Michael that he talk to his SDC about the ins and outs of purchasing a car?
