nicksmum - Your son must know that he really doesn't get to choose the ship he is on, right?  They do ask them for a 'dream' list of 3 - destinations they would like to go, but the Navy sends them where they NEED them.  Katie didn't have any reservations about the size of the ship and Japan was on her list of 3.  Katie hoped that her first ship wouldn't be a carrier, but she is on an LHD2 which has about 1,200 sailors and onloads about 1,800 marines (I'd have the check #s for sure) when they go out to sea since heres is an amphibious ship.

@marianneKt, when I talked to my son after graduation he told me he wants to be on a small ship, I couldn't believe it because he has always talked about how much he wants to be on a carrier. I finally asked him on our last day together why he had changed his mind, he said that there is so much to remember and that it is very confusing and hard to find your way around the ship. I hope he doesn't limit himself and his opportunities because he thinks it will be too hard. He has never had a job or been away to college so I hope it is just that things are all new and maybe a little overwhelming. did your daughter have any reservations about what type of ship she would be on?

Nicksmum - Glad you had the weekend together.  It is nice that he will have a phone so he has the opporunity to call.  Seemed to recall during A school my daughter called just about every weekend.

Yesterday I started the morning with a pc from Katie in Sasebo and then ended with my daughter Alicia calling from Sault Ste Marie, MI.  My sons picked me out some perennials after church and made lunch.

nicksmum - Have a wonderful time!  Safe traveling.  It's been over 2 years since Katie's PIR, but I still remember the wonderful time!

Marianne - happy for you!  Australia!  That's exciting!

mysteryfan - The Essex was called over to Operation Tomadachi immediately after the tsunami and earthquake, but she did not go on shore.  The Marines and many of the male sailors did.  Currently she is in port for a short maintenance inspection before their next deployment.  Australia is one of her destinations this summer.

Hope your sailor's doing well.

MarianneKT's Mom-Glad you got to have a long talk with your daughter!  Does Katie's job entail doing relief or rescue work on the mainland in Japan?

My sailor's still in A School doing his strand, still no official word on his orders.
