It is very important that your future Sailor be physically fit prior to shipping to the RTC (these are new standards beginning 1/1/2018) and that he be able to pass an initial run test. See Navy Sets New Physical Fitness Standard to Start Boot Camp. "The initial run standard is evaluated on the 1.5 mile run of the first Physical Fitness Assessment (PFA) at boot camp. The initial run standard for male recruits will be 16 minutes 10 seconds and 18 minutes seven seconds for female recruits."

Christine, I understand! I try not to cry every time I think of my boys leaving! My first son leaves in Aug. and my second one leaves in Nov.
I have had them with me for what seems like forever! The thought of not being able to talk them at the end of the day or hearing about their "nothingness" I find myself emotional when I'm around them. I know the Navy will take care of them, but the navy isn't their mom! They keep looking at me like I'm crazy. I never knew growing up was so hard to do! (On moms)
I am very proud of my sons! I just wish it wasn't so hard to let go!

Yeah my first sailor is home!! Got to tell you he had a lay over in Chicago O'Hare and went to the USO he said he talked to some of the new recurits getting ready to head to GL for boot camp he gave them the Hooyah and told them it's not as bad as you think but be ready for no sleep!! So any body who had a recruit that left today my sailor might of talked them.

Vickie..when myson was in MEPS there was another kid who had gotton a ticket a day or two before he went to MEPS and they would not let him swear in until the ticket was paid for...theykid had to call someone at home and they had to run to the court housepay the ticket and send a fax with a receipt from the county office that it had been paid. So I guess the answer is no.

Jeannie, I understand how you feel. My son leaves on the 18th and I am already having a hard with it. I will keep you in my prayers and know that he will be alright. He is off to the start of a wonderful adventure and you just have to keep positive thoughts. Let us know when you hear from him. We are all here for you.

Michelle, I think your message was for Debbi but I completely agree with everything you said. You gave her some great advice and your son is very blessed to have such a wise and caring mother. My son will be leaving in two weeks and he is excited but also starting to get a little nervous. It will be his first time away from home so it will be very difficult for all of us. I pray that with time it will get easier. Thanks for all the great advice.

I hope this isn't a silly question but my son leaves in two weeks and I am trying to think of everything he needs to take care of before he leaves. My question is.....I wanted to schedule him for a dental check up and cleaning before he leaves should I go ahead and do that or is that something that will be done in bootcamp?
Comment by Mari on February 2, 2009 at 11:07pm
Rosemary I will be saying a prayer for you and your so.....from all that I have read here the time at bootcamp goes by quickly and you will have PIR to look forward to. I will be in your shoes soon, my leaves in two weeks.

Stay strong we are all here for you.
