It is very important that your future Sailor be physically fit prior to shipping to the RTC (these are new standards beginning 1/1/2018) and that he be able to pass an initial run test. See Navy Sets New Physical Fitness Standard to Start Boot Camp. "The initial run standard is evaluated on the 1.5 mile run of the first Physical Fitness Assessment (PFA) at boot camp. The initial run standard for male recruits will be 16 minutes 10 seconds and 18 minutes seven seconds for female recruits."

Angela aka Mal's mom - My daughter was in DEP for 11 months while she finished high school. She did very little to prepare physically, despite a LOT of encouragement from me. On her last night here she said "I wish I had prepared more so I didn't have all these doubts". Yeah, we can tell them all we want but....you know how it goes.
My daughter did make her own flash cards for the information in the START guide and we all would quiz her on them. At least she is prepared for that. Like I said, she left last night so I don't know how it's going yet. Hopefully your daughter will go in and do what's best for her and her future. Doesn't mean she can't marry the guy but it does give her a fall back plan if that doesn't work out. I'm here if you have any questions.
Hi Navy Moms, I recently joined this group and this is my first post. My daughter swore in June 4th. She goes to RTC October 28th. In the meantime, she is struggling with her decision. She is busy working her summer job but when it ends and all of her friends go back to their respective colleges, she will probably pick up where she left of after MEPS. However, one more twist, her on again off again boyfriend (he is in A school now ,"Nuke" program) has now propositioned her to marry him. I am on a roller coaster with no brakes here! I am trying to stay neutral and let her make her own decisions...because, let's face it,,,,if I open my mouth..I'm damned if I do and damned if I don't. She is keeping in contact with her recruiter but hasn't been working on her homework or PT. I don't know if it's because she is so darn tired working in this heat all day or because she is on the fence. I just want her to be completely prepared for BC. She also didn't get a rate (the rates she qualified for were not available and she took whatever just to get in) and I don't know whether to encourage her to finish her associates and then go?? She is 3/4 there now. Will the recruiter work with her to extend her DEP? Any words of wisdom would be greatly appreciated. I feel like she is going in 50 different directions at one time. Thanks!
Alicia, it seems low to me too and especially because I was told that 50 was the minimum it took to get into the Navy. (That's what my son's high school guidance counselor told him.) I know the highest you can get is a 99. My son got an 82 the first time he took it (while in high school), then decided not to go military. Two and a half years later, he changed his mind again and joined the Navy. His test score was no longer valid. Only good for two years, so he had to take it again. This time he got a 97!
Your daughter will have to check with her recruiter to find out if she can take it again. I don't know why they wouldn't let her, but we have to remember we're dealing with the government. I'm sure there are rules in place, she'll just have to find out what they are.
Good luck to her!
brojo, Yes, NFCU is a good choice, but your then recruit could choose to keep his current bank account. See the info on that in Things to Do in the Last Month before Your Future Sailor Leaves for....
Some have managed to get out of a few of the immunizations by taking their immunization record to the RTC, but there will still be immunizations even if he is UTD on his shots since there are some that are required in the military that may not be needed by all civilians.
Hi nukemom2lindsay!
Thats not true, I bought our plane tickets the same day that we received his official PIR date in the mail. You do want to be sure that you get a refundable ticket or a ticket that you can make changes to in case the PIR date gets pushed back for some reason. I know some people waited until 2 days before, but that would really stress me out! Plus I liked looking at the tickets and knowing it was almost here.
Hi I'm new and my daughter lieaves Dec 15. I've been watching a lot of videos and it looks like we can't even make flight reservations for her BC until 2 days before the date?
J'sMom, no, he will not automatically be an RPOC at BC, but he could be chosen based on the experience. As RPOC in DEP, he is in charge when the recruiter is not around and ensures that things are done that need to be done. The responsibilities of RPOC at BC can be found in Recruit Petty Officer Positions.
