It is very important that your future Sailor be physically fit prior to shipping to the RTC (these are new standards beginning 1/1/2018) and that he be able to pass an initial run test. See Navy Sets New Physical Fitness Standard to Start Boot Camp. "The initial run standard is evaluated on the 1.5 mile run of the first Physical Fitness Assessment (PFA) at boot camp. The initial run standard for male recruits will be 16 minutes 10 seconds and 18 minutes seven seconds for female recruits."

Geosmom...such good news. I so remember exactly what you are feeling. Just beaming with pride inside. Congratulations to your son and your family.

Geosmom, congrats!!! I have a son leaving April 15 and one leaving June 11! It's exciting and scary at the same time.

From my understanding it's not just the total number score but the break down. Like what they scored in each section is what helps decide the rate (job) that is available to them. What kind of mechanic would he like to be? There are several different kinds from working on aircraft to working on the support equipment (fire trucks and tow tractors) and etc

Hi all I have a son who is going through the recruiting process now. Last Tuesday he took the asvab and scored a 63. Now he is waiting to hear back from the recruiter to schedule his physical. . I have a couple of questions. What jobs are available for that score? He is interested in mechanics. Once his physical is complete what is next? Thanks :)

Breaking news!  My daughter went back to MEPS this morning and signed as a Nuke with a new ship date of September 2.  We are so excited!  They're still saying if an earlier date opens up she will be considered for it. She would like to go earlier but at least she's not in limbo anymore.

Congrats navymama231. First of many times you'll be proud of your boy concerning the navy, I'm sure.

I am so proud! My son went to MEPS last week to get a waiver, ended up getting sworn in, and is going to be a corpsman. As if that weren't enough, he went to his first DEPS meeting joining 8-10 recruits, some of which had been attending for several months. He was asked to stay after (worried of course) and was then told they wanted him as Recruit Chief Petty Officer (i think I got that right).
1st meeting and the newbie is asked to manage the team! Such a proud mom!

Anyone out there from Northern California with a son or daughter leaving for BC in May?
Comment by Navy brat/mom on January 10, 2014 at 12:57pm
Not sure on the drop rate, but if she really wants to do the nuke program I would wait. My son is right there too. He will test again at the end of March to get into the program, and shouldn't have a problem passing this time. That being said, he won't be 18 until the end of September and the earliest he can ship is the end of August, which means he will probably not ship until after the start of their fiscal year. We are OK with this as it gives us more time with him and lines the holidays out a little better. And I'd rather him was for something he wants, than hold onto hope someone drops or leave earlier doing something he would rather not do. Just our thoughts on this. Hope it helps, and good luck to your daughter.
