It is very important that your future Sailor be physically fit prior to shipping to the RTC (these are new standards beginning 1/1/2018) and that he be able to pass an initial run test. See Navy Sets New Physical Fitness Standard to Start Boot Camp. "The initial run standard is evaluated on the 1.5 mile run of the first Physical Fitness Assessment (PFA) at boot camp. The initial run standard for male recruits will be 16 minutes 10 seconds and 18 minutes seven seconds for female recruits."

Very interesting Jannykay. We live about 15 min from thethe office. My son doesn't have his own transportation, so that could have an impact on how much he goes in. He has to check in by text or call every Monday. I'm sure the extra time your daughter spends there will only benefit her. I know some of the DEP kids here hang out quite a bit at our office volunteering with phones, etc. The exposure probably helps keep some of those kids more motivated and interested. Our recruiter told us they could not lead PT, but the future sailors could get together on their own to do PT. It definitely is a long drawn out period. My son has almost been in DEP as long as he has left before he goes to BC. It certainly is a learning experience for all of us.

@ Comment by Sierrascrapper yesterday Wow Jannykay......

I think the DEP schedule is impacted by proximity to recruiter's office.... we live less than 3 miles from the office .... expectations for my daughter are different than a DEP that lives several hours away.   Plus, she is not currently employed so her availability is open - she has to check in weekly and then finds out specifics for the week.   I think the travel request was tied to the distance - she is going to be over 350 miles from home with the holidays, not sure she will miss any meetings but they did have her provide address/phone number.

This is all new - - not sure how much is to prepare for future expectations, how much is recruiter/location planned vs. "Navy" planned.   Plus, it seems there is a large number of DEP they are working with and I would think it helps to keep them engaged overall over these drawn out periods of months.

Learning lots in little steps.   Janny

Today marks 200 days until my son leaves for BC and yet another DEP meeting today. I must say, the Christmas music on the radio sure has been having an effect on me. This Christmas is so special and it's hard to fathom that my twin boys are growing up and going out into the world.

It is quite a road, but hang in there! There is a lot of good info here! Good Luck!

My daughter just went to MEPS on Monday.  If nothing changes, she will go to boot camp on March 18, 2014 as a Sonar Technician. I've been scouring these pages but now that she's official, I have officially joined.

Wow Jannykay...your daughter has to do a lot with her recruiter. My son goes toto a monthly DEP meeting and a separate monthly mentoring session. They don't do any PT, but my son does go to the gym two or three times a week. Why did your daughter have to get a special request for travel? Is she going out of the country or missing a DEP meeting?

Best of luck to your son Navy Brat/Mom. I'm sure he will do well. I will keep you all in my prayers. I remember how stressed I was when my son took his Nuke test. I should've known better that my son would do just fine.

BTW...get used to being flexible. There have been a few times we were told to show up for a mentoring session and then nobody was there or told it was not a good day. The mantra we all need to keep saying over and over is "Needs of the Navy" LOL

That is wonderful!  My daughter visited the recruiter to start the process last May but did not get through all the hoops until Mid November!   She tested great and then took an additional test for Nuke.  She doesn't deploy to boot camp til May 19, 2014.   I think the whole gov't shut down impacted some of the timing!   But she is in now, going to study group, DEP/PT  meetings each week and even has to fill out a CHIP for traveling this Christmas to my sister and mom.    Patience is critical, but in its own time it will come together.   Positive thoughts and prayers to Austin for his test on Thursday - deep breaths for him and you for his best test and most options!

Good luck Sailormom2013.

And our frustration continues... Austin was supposed to take his nuke test last Monday, but the recruiter told us the day before Thanksgiving that he hadn't got A's school records or police reports from TN. So we rescheduled it for today, and once again told all his teachers he would not be there. We hadn't heard from the recruiter, so we showed up at the office yesterday like we were told to do. Waited for over an hour, tried calling and texting the recruiter with no response, only to get a call well after we were back home that they still don't have the police reports from TN. I'm so ill....the least they could have done was call so we didn't waste our time. I wonder if they realize the impression this gives these young people?
