It is very important that your future Sailor be physically fit prior to shipping to the RTC (these are new standards beginning 1/1/2018) and that he be able to pass an initial run test. See Navy Sets New Physical Fitness Standard to Start Boot Camp. "The initial run standard is evaluated on the 1.5 mile run of the first Physical Fitness Assessment (PFA) at boot camp. The initial run standard for male recruits will be 16 minutes 10 seconds and 18 minutes seven seconds for female recruits."

My son leaves for meps Sunday to take his nuclear engineering test Monday. We are paying he passes so that it will alleviate some of the fear her is feeling. He's worried about leaving home and wondering if he can do it because he's never been away from home. Unfortunately for him he will have almost a year to think about it because of his age and birth date. The earliest he will be able to leave will be late August 2014. I can't even imagine the stress he is under for being just 17. Anyway all prayers would be appreciated.

Good luck to those who just left, or are about to leave, and we hope everyone has a great and happy thanksgiving. Safe travels for those who are traveling, and those who are not able to make it home will be in our hearts.

If your DEPper will still be here for Thanksgiving and Christmas this year, what are you planning to do special for the holidays with your FS? I would love to hear your ideas!

I think we will take in the tree lighting ceremony in our town this year. Also, my FS has been in marching band all through high school and lives for music. I saw an event for a Tuba Christmas Concert and a performance of Handel's Messiah at the local University, so we will probably take those in. Another activity we will do is make a gingerbread village with his twin brother and their girlfriends.

Hi, TexasMom.  Hoping the departure of your DEPr went well.  I can't imagine it was an easy moment.

My son leaves May 6, 2014 from CA . I am just enjoying every single second I get to spend with him. Lucky for me his lease on his apt is up in April so he will be home for about 30 days before bootcamp!!! I am far more nervous than he is!

My daughter leaves 12/10!  So soon... Don't know where to start to understand my feelings.  Excited for her, eager to meet new friends and begin my own new adventure... but it's bittersweet...  anyone else feel the same?
