It is very important that your future Sailor be physically fit prior to shipping to the RTC (these are new standards beginning 1/1/2018) and that he be able to pass an initial run test. See Navy Sets New Physical Fitness Standard to Start Boot Camp. "The initial run standard is evaluated on the 1.5 mile run of the first Physical Fitness Assessment (PFA) at boot camp. The initial run standard for male recruits will be 16 minutes 10 seconds and 18 minutes seven seconds for female recruits."

Hi Y'all!

This site is terrific!  Don't know what I would've done without it.  My DEPr leaves 20 Nov to BC.  Does anyone else have a DEPr leaving from San Antonio TX that day?

I just finished reading Honor, Courage & Committment by J. Leahy.  It's a well sritten book about Navy BC @ Great Lakes.  I got it on Amazon for cheap....I recommend it to any parent as well as to any future Sailor who hasn't left yet.  Though it's a bit old (?2009), the routines are probably the same.  Wish I had read it prior to my son leaving, but REALLY wish he had read it.

K10Mom...i was hoping one of the admins would respond first. However, your best bet is to have her write the addresses on a piece of paper and put it in the wallet she brings our the small Bible that she may bring. You dont want to chance the fact that the address book may be sent back home.

Ok, I read that your recruit could bring a small address book, her start up packet only says a small bible.  Can someone please let me know if her very small address book is allowed?

Son leaving for boot camp May 2014 going for Logistics Specialist. I have no idea what that is. But I have time to find out and spend with him.

You can get through this VeganMom. This is a good time to start getting used to the idea of him being away from you. I remember having trouble concentrating at work all day when my son went to MEPS for the first time and then balled my eyes out after he called me with his ship date. I wasn't really crying out of sadness, but more of thinking about my boy growing up and becoming a man. I still have plenty of "moments", but I'm very excited for his future.

My son is on his way to MEPS to pick his job. ...I am so nervous and excited. I will keep my phone close awaiting his call. No caffeine this morning. He is my middle child I have always had a special love and worry for him as a typical middle son. Thank goodness I have work to distract me some. Wish I had went with him. .. but he is a man and said no he can handle it. Wow I was surprised and proud all at the same time. It kind of hit me. .... he is no longer my baby boy... he is all grown up...a man. ... and I have to let he go.

I sure can relate Smoney77. I felt so alone and scared and confused when my son first told us he wanted to join the Navy. But I was also very excited for him. We really supported his decision and encouraged it when he told us. It was definitely a complete surprise. As soon as he told us and even before he went to MEPS, I discovered this site. It set me so much more at ease and helped me to understand that my feelings were normal. I'm not really afraid for him as much as just concerned that he will complete all of his training. My son is going into the Nuclear Field and I've read how difficult the program is. I know he is excited and up for the challenge. I am trying to prepare myself for all the worry in the future. I have made some wonderful friends on N4M already and even have met a couple Moms inin person. They have made me feel so much a part of the Navy family. It really helps to have people who can relate to you and what you are experiencing.

sierrascrapper - I have another son that is 21 months younger than my future sailor...and I think he is going through the same thing yours did. All of the attention is on his brother, and he is feeling left out...but at the same time I think he is starting to realize how much he is going to miss him. I am so glad that there is this site, so I don't feel so alone. Everyone keeps telling me "you should be so proud!!" and I am, but I am so scared for him and sad that I will miss him terribly! They don't understand this roller coaster that I am on like all of you do.

That is so sweet Smoney77. I can't imagine how hard it will be for her and your son. I have twins and I'm still wondering how it's going to affect them being apart. They are very competitive and actually don't get along very well. Maybe this will bring them closer. There was a lot of drama when my DEPper joined as the other twin was feeling like he wasn't getting any attention. Things have settled down since June, and they seem to be confiding in each other and hopefully strengthening their brotherly bond. I'll tell ya, not aa day goes by that I don't get choked up over something when I think about my son leaving for BC. Some days it's pure pride and other days it's sadness or both.
