It is very important that your future Sailor be physically fit prior to shipping to the RTC (these are new standards beginning 1/1/2018) and that he be able to pass an initial run test. See Navy Sets New Physical Fitness Standard to Start Boot Camp. "The initial run standard is evaluated on the 1.5 mile run of the first Physical Fitness Assessment (PFA) at boot camp. The initial run standard for male recruits will be 16 minutes 10 seconds and 18 minutes seven seconds for female recruits."

It's time to introduce myself. I joined Navy for Moms about 2 weeks ago searching for answers to the 1000 questions I had. This site is wonderful!! It answered almost all of them. My 17 year old son came to me about a month ago saying he decided to join the Navy, so off to the recruits we went. It has been a long drawn out process...had to get his foot cleared (broke about 3 years ago) , then tested for the ASVAB (luckily he got over 50), went to the physical and passed...BUT Somewhere in my move 2 years ago I have misplaced his social security card, and because of that we are on hold. (the government shut down, no new ss cards or replacements) As soon as that is done he picks a job and we have a ship date!! so far I have been on an emotional roller coaster from pride to sadness of not seeing him like I do now. Anyways. I just thought I would introduce myself instead of being a stalker. Thanks to everyone who has shared stories and information. It has helped me so much, and I know it has helped others!

How wonderful DoubleNavyGrandmom!  Keep us up to date after your grandson gets his ship date.  My son is leaving next summer after HS graduation and he is also going into the Nuke Field.  Looking forward to the journey ahead.

Welcome Tonya!  Give your son a BIG hug and tell him THANKS for his decision. My son doesn't leave til July, so we are doing our best to make this a special year. This website and all these groups are so very helpful.  I don't know everything...but I know the seasoned ones will step right up and answer any questions you might have.  Have you joined the DEP-Leaving for Bootcamp in April group yet?  That's a GREAT place to connect with other Moms who have recruits leaving in the same month.

Well, My son is in the hotel tonight and will fly out in the morning to Great Lakes. I have enjoyed spending the last few months with him before he left.

My daughter was my youngest and the last to leave home. It is hard but the weeks will fly. Getting"the box" is tough no notes just their clothes. Get ready for that. But soon after you will get an address to write. They don't have much time to write oh but the joy when you get a letter or surprise call in a few weeks!

Such a strange day...my daughter put a sweatshirt and tennis shoes on the floor by the floor by the front door..which is usually where my son would drop his...so I yelled down the hall for him to come pick them up to suddenly stop and realize hes not home anymore...needless to say I sat down right there and cried.
