It is very important that your future Sailor be physically fit prior to shipping to the RTC (these are new standards beginning 1/1/2018) and that he be able to pass an initial run test. See Navy Sets New Physical Fitness Standard to Start Boot Camp. "The initial run standard is evaluated on the 1.5 mile run of the first Physical Fitness Assessment (PFA) at boot camp. The initial run standard for male recruits will be 16 minutes 10 seconds and 18 minutes seven seconds for female recruits."

Dear tytulip40, I am sorry to hear about your son's delay! Thanks so much for writing me even though you have your own issues! I have been trying to figure this online "group" thing out all day so that I could respond again and wish you all the best!!

Well - its a no go this month!  The MEPS dr wants the area to heal - wants to see him in two weeks and will decide ship date at that time.  :(  My son is really sad and bummed right now.

bcsmom - it's at Marriott in Doral - not sure about staying - my son was sch to leave this morning until the dr saw a wart on his middle finger (little frustrated since he was delayed entry so for 9 months he's gone to DEP meetings, trained with some special ops shipmates and no one ever said a thing)! Sorry for venting there - any hoot - to answer your question, I think so! My son had wart cut off and area coutarized today - meeting with MEPS DR tomorrow for all clear to leave Thursday morning! Been a crazy day!

bcsmom, tell your son not to worry about the asvab. If he scored a 70 on the practice he will be fine. My son scored mid 60's on the practice and scored 86 on the actual test. As far as the rest, I honestly cannot tell you. We had our son go on his own. The first time a year ago while we were out of town, and prior to him turning 18. The second time right after he turned 18 and could do all this without our signature. The reason for 2 trips for us was he was trying to go nuke and missed it last year by 6 points and retested for it this year. The best advice I can give is for him to be mindful of ship dates if he has the opportunity to pick. Our son chose to leave this coming March instead of this month. It has given him too much time to sit idle at home and question his choices. After some talks with his dad and I he is back on track, but now that we are 3 months away from shipping and he's excited and I'm falling apart... Lol. Good luck to your son, and join the boot camp group, LOTS of wonderful information, even when they are getting ready to leave.

please forgive me about the "recruiter not being helpful part". She is simply new at this position, per her words..." I am a scared mom. I do like her and she has been very good to us. I simply need advice from anyone that has the answers

Hi, my son has his MEPS appointment tomorrow in Miami to join the DEP. I am a super nervous! Although he score around 70 on the pre-test, he is scared to death for the exam so his dad has offered to go down to Miami with him. We know that he won't be able to be WITH him until the swear in, but at least he will be in the area. Does anyone know what hotel they use and if so, can my husband get a room at the same hotel even though we know he can't be on the military floor? Also, can he see our son when they shuttle him back to the hotel to sleep prior to the physical??? I am so confused and my son's recruiter has not been very helpful.

Hi.. My son is trying to join the Navy.  He wanted Nuke (he is a Physics major in college) and met all the requirements until he went to Meps. Found out his eyes are past the myopia cutoff and he is color deficient.  So they are applying for a waiver but were waiting on his drug tests to submit the waiver application.  Waiting, waiting, waiting.  He was just notified yesterday that he has to go back to Meps because (wait for it...)  Someone dropped a whole tray of urine samples & they all have to be retested.  His recruiter said  "only in the military"

Just have to laugh
