It is very important that your future Sailor be physically fit prior to shipping to the RTC (these are new standards beginning 1/1/2018) and that he be able to pass an initial run test. See Navy Sets New Physical Fitness Standard to Start Boot Camp. "The initial run standard is evaluated on the 1.5 mile run of the first Physical Fitness Assessment (PFA) at boot camp. The initial run standard for male recruits will be 16 minutes 10 seconds and 18 minutes seven seconds for female recruits."

andysmom-My son was a Depper for 8 mos and finally went to BC in Nov 2013. We missed him for Thanksgivng, his 21st Bday and Christmas. Ahhh, that was hard having him gone for those events. But the Navy treated him very well for the holidays. And this website got me thru it even better. We're all in the same boat (haha-boat) so follow the forums as your son moves up the ladder. It's the most exciting thing we've done with our son, as it's the gift that keeps on giving!

andysmom-We just got back from visiting our son (AD) in Pensacola. I asked him if some guys didn't 'make it' in BC because they couldnt do X-amount of push ups, etc. He said that the other guys help them out to get them to pass.  Your son will be in good hands, don't worry mom.

I'm sure he'll do just fine Andy's mom. Once he leaves, just remember what they all say on here..."No news is good news" It's amazing how much a guy can change even after only a few weeks of working out. And remember, they want these SRs to succeed, so they will work with them. If I recall, I think they even have a recruit in each company that helps the ones that are struggling. So it's a team effort.

Andysmom...I don't know what kind of shape your son is in, but from everything I've read, they say that your future sailor should prepare as much as possible physically for BC before they leave.  My son is skinny as a rail and doesn't have much muscle mass. As soon as he swore into DEP, we signed him up for a gym membership so that he could work out and prepare for when he leaves for BC in July. I knew my son wouldn't have much trouble running, but I was afraid he would have trouble with the push-ups and sit-ups.  He has been focusing on all three aspects in his workouts.  I know the RDCs try to help the recruits as much as possible.  From what I've read. they may put him in a special division called FIT and it may delay his PIR if he can't pass his PFA. But...usually that is all they need to get through it.  I hope that all goes well for him and that he will make it through BC just fine and at the normal time. I know the recruits definitely get a lot of physical training in BC so that may be enough to get him ready to pass his PFA.  Have him try to do as many as he can before he leaves so that he at least knows where he stands before he goes.  Best of luck to you and hang in there!

andysmom - My recruit will be leaving for GL on March 11.

Comment by SummerRainbow on February 23, 2014 at 8:15pm

andysmom - As I understand from my recruit the minimum  is 43 push-ups, 65 sit-ups, and a 1.5 mile run in 12.30 min.  I also know they will work with you to achieve this. With that said, here is the link to the Navy.com site with the Physical Training information. It has a good general guideline:

andysmom-you're not worrying too soon. Make sure he practices swimming. My son graduated from GL bc on 1-10-14, and the week before, a couple guys didnt pass swim and were held back from grad.... Had to tell parents not to come to PIR.....On another note, his buddy from home was a weak runner and he was not held back, he did ok.

Welcome Larry's mom. You sound like you have the right attitude. And thank your family for their service from all of us. You will definitely want to join the Bootcamp Moms Group too. They will be so helpful to you while your son is in BC. You will survive this like so many other Moms. Start writing him letters even if you don't have his address and once you receive his form letter, you can send them.
