Stealing is an issue. Mine had his DIRTY mind you underwear stolen. Only hazing type thing I know of is the tradition of Shellback and it is one day and all done in fun, a little gross but fun.

Anne - I'm not sure I've heard of hazing specifically.  I do know that some Chief's can be great mentors, while others can be, well, nasty.  And I also know if your son leaves anything unattended for even a minute, it is likely to get stolen.  Sad but true.  Phones, laundry, belts, etc have all been stolen in stories I've heard on the Facebook page for Navy Moms. Does your son have a rate (job), or is he Undesignated?  Of course it takes a little time to make friends after arriving, but if people are being rude, that is more likely just a matter of those individuals being that way.  Your son can report any issues to his chief and he can speak with a chaplain in confidence.

So how long can the so-called hazing go on for a new sailor? I'm pretty damm angry right now.

Hi Labornurse - we were there to see the ship depart.  The afternoon before as we were driving to or from base, my son pointed out your son walking.  I missed seeing him, but I know he was there :-).

Mine is 3 years on second deployment aboard the USS Bainbridge.

Hello Suwigg- nice to see someone else from the RUSSELL. My son is also enjoying his first deployment. Was hoping someone would start a new RUSSELL group or revive the old one. No Facebook for me. Hope to see more Russell moms on here.

Hi miss deb, I don't post much myself. From what I have experienced with my daughter's deployments and friends of hers have experienced, nine months is the norm.

Am so glad you posted!  Now I know what an "underway" is. Thanks for the helpful Info. 

You mentioned deployments. Is there a typical # of months (perhaps 4 or  6   months) out at sea...or does it vary?

Hi Moms and Dads -

I'm not on here often, but I enjoy reading your posts.  My son has been in 3 years and just last week left San Diego for his first deployment.  He's an LS2 on the USS Russell.  We did get one email so far and he's enjoying it.  Yipee!  

Miss Deb - when they go on short trips of a few days or a few weeks, that is referred to as an Underway.  Ships do a lot of those just before deployment for ship shakedowns and crew training.

I was so glad to see your destroyer mom comments. Am thrilled to know there are more of us here to share our thoughts. Thank goodness us moms have each other! :-)
My son has just left for his first destroyer cruise/tour?? Not really sure what to call it!
I haven't had a phone call since he boarded the ship, but am thrilled with the few emails received.. Just hanging on for more of them. It seems there are lots of newbys.. And he finds himself watching, absorbing and trying to stay out of the experienced sailors way. His actual job training isn't scheduled until he gets back to shore.
Have you found a way to track when the ship may be back at port? It would be fabulous to be able to greet our loved one back home .. Especially when returning from their first time at sea.
