Steph...every family member on this site is a "SPECIAL" someone and can set up a group for any topic, ship, etc. Just go to groups and click on ADD a new group. If you need any help just let me know.

MWR is Morale, Welfare and Recreation dept and is available worldwide for all branches of the military. There is an office for them on just about all bases and your sailors can go there and buy discounted tickets, book tours, etc. I'll see if I can find the link for the Yokosuka office and perhaps you can do some of your planning on line.

Spensmom, Cranking is...team building or bonding or ... I'm sure there are alot of definitions for this but it's like the rites of passage that an enlisted sailor does if they are E4 and below. Typically they will work in the galley serving their shipmates. They don't cook but they could serve food, clear tables and wash dishes to name a few tasks. They can perform this duty in the galley, chief's mess or officer's wardroom. The length of time to serve varies from ship to ship based on the needs of the ship. Our son was able to knock his cranking duty in the wardroom and on his ship it was 90 days but I know other ships that it lasted 180 days. They do not do their regular jobs or stand duty while cranking.

Hi, All,
Some of these posts brought tears to my eyes! My son is waiting for his orders for the Chung Hoon. I know it will be difficult when he leaves. He surprised us yesterday when he came home for a few hours and we went out to dinner. He's had two funerals to attend for Navy vets - to participate in the flag folding and presenting to the family (I believe both have been WWII vets).

What is "cranking"????

I was wondering.... Do you have to be a certain someone to create a group for your ship? I noticed that our ship doesn't have a group on here yet, and I thought about trying to create one, but I wanted to make sure that I could. Can just anyone make a group, or does it have to be the Ombudsman, CO, or someone like that?

My next question would be, how do I go about making a group?

My son is actually looking forward to this. He joined the Navy to see to the world, and at 20 years old, he going to see an awful lot of the world on this deployment! I sure hope he takes lots of pictures so I can see the world through his camera lens.

I'm an ole' Navy wife so lived thru many deployments with the hubby but now...it's our son and ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh....it's just different!
