Welcome ladies,
Angie- our son is stationed in Pearl Harbor also but they are deployed right now.
Michele -- I don't know if your ship is deployed but a few went out this week and not all ships in SD will deploy at one time. All the ships have a website - just google your ship's name ...but they won't post their deployment schedule due to OPSEC. I would also look on facebook and see if they have page set up for your ship. Lots of ships have gone that way and it's an awesome way to keep up when they are deployed with updates and photos.
Kanga-ooooooh sea sickness. We have a friend that was a big, burly sailor and he never got over seasickness while in the Navy but doesn't seem to have any problem on his own boat now. Send her some ginger candy and see if that helps. There is a group in place for your ship.

I have a son on the USS Sterett, I don't know if they deployed or not but he is also out of San Diego so I assume so. Does anyone know about this ship??

Fair winds and following seas to some of our fine destroyers ...

By Lt. Zachary Harrell, Destroyer Squadron 24 Public Affairs

USS BAINBRIDGE, At Sea (NNS) -- Four ships led by Commander, Destroyer Squadron (COMDESRON) 24 departed Norfolk, Va. Sep. 21, to participate in Joint Warrior, a coalition exercise designed and led by the Joint Tactical Exercise Planning Staff (JTEPS) in the United Kingdom and staged off the coast of Scotland.

Sailors from USS Stout (DDG 55), USS Nitze (DDG 94), USS Bainbridge (DDG 96) and Fleet replenishment oiler USNS Leroy Grumman (T-AO 195) will be representing the United States in the exercise that will also include sea, air and land forces from Belgium, Germany, Greece, Estonia, Italy, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Spain, Sweden, Turkey, United Kingdom and NATO.

"Joint Warrior will allow our Sailors the opportunity to practice operating with our coalition partners so that we are better prepared to support multi-national operations in real-world missions," said Capt. Aaron Jacobs, DESRON 24 commander. "Our Sailors will gain essential training and experience by operating as part of a multinational force in a multi-warfare environment."

Hi Renee, welcome!
Our son is on his first deployment too - I mailed his last care package yesterday ;-)

Are you a member of the AECF group? It is for ETs and FCs - the members would love to hear how your ET is doing since leaving C school . You can find them at: http://www.navyformoms.com/group/fcsfirecontrol

Hi MMAS716 check on facebook to see if the ship is on there as well as the internet, most ships have both.

MMAS716 - are you on the ombudsman's communication list? That will be your best source. They will usually send an email out in advance to let you know there is a date and to contact them for more information.

How do I find out when my daughters ship will be coming home. I would like to go see her when it does.

Hi Crystal, welcome to the group! Is this your son's first ship? There is no group set up for their ship, you could start one but I would recommend you join the Japan Moms group as well as the Yokosuka group.

Your son will get an FPO mailbox and you can write and send packages to that just like it's a regular US address. He will also get assigned an email address by his ship.

We used to live in Yokosuka and LOVEd it there, your son will go thru a wonderful indoc class to introduce him to the culture of Japan which will include using the bus and train systems there. It's a great place to experience and lots of Americans stationed or living there.

Wonderful Velma - it's always good to get some fresh ideas. Working on another box for our son this week, it might be his LAST one for this deployment ---- homecoming is almost in striking distance for us.
Comment by Steph on September 11, 2010 at 9:48am
I agree with Mary. If you have to choose between the two, I would go to the homecoming. I've gone to send my husband off on his deployments, and there are not a lot of families there. The Sailors get to the ship, and they are almost immediately busy with getting everything ready to go. At the homecoming, they get off the ship, and they are yours until they have to report back into work. If they have duty the day they pull in, you can go on the ship after everyone that is leaving is off, and hang out with your sailor until about 9 or 10pm if you want.
