Oh yes, a commissioning is a really neat thing to watch. I went to the one for my husband's last ship, the USS James E. Williams. This one will be in Wilmington, NC.

That's really neat, Sue. My husband's ship, the USS Gravely, also commissions in November. Are you planning to attend the commissioning?

Hey Carol, welcome. Our son is stationed in Pearl as well so if you need any information just holler. Our son had a long A and C school as well so it was 2.5 years before he got to see what sea life was all about - no complaints from him at this stage :-)

That is a really good idea. I'll try it and see how it works with mine. Yes, I thought somehow I will sort of try really hard to get used to it. I'll try really hard, I keep telling myself.

Mary, that video was amazing, thank you so much for including that in your response.

It is just overwhelming to think that our children now men and women, are going to be doing this. So far away from us. I'm glad I got to see what the ships look like and what there is for them to do etc. I really hope the ship's COs are good communicators because like NavyMomXXXY my son will give about the same amount of information and that will be very difficult for me at first. I assume I'll get used to it.

My Son ship is the USS Sterett. Thank you for all the information, that is really helpful. I've looked online and don't see a specific site for this ship. I just really want to make sure I at least get something every 1 to 2 weeks or I'll go crazy. My son is not a big communicator so email is usually his way. Wow if I could get pictures that would be unbelievable. I won't hold my breath for that.

Our son is on his first deployment now and I'm happy to say the communications are so much better than I would have imagined. He called this morning ;-) and somehow manages to call home about once a week. He's not so big on facebook or email but some sailors are. His ship has it's own facebook page and that is a treasure for the families as they post updates as they can and lots of photos for the families to enjoy.
Yesterday I seen a photo of my son and today a phone call from him -- so we are feeling very lucky this week.

PS...what ship is your son on? You can share that - just not ship movements, dates, operational concerns.

Hi, I just joined this group my son is in San Diego and will be deploying in the next few months. Does anyone have someone that will be on a destroyer deploying? I really would like to have someone to talk with. I don't know exactly how to get information about their ship life and communications. I don't know if I'm allowed to say the name of the ship on this site, how does this work?
