I thought it would be great to get a group together of people who have a Gunners Mate in training or one on duty. I hope we can all give each other a little insight as to what is in store for our Navy Men and Women!!

Hello everyone!

Not quite a GM mom yet. My son leaves one month from today for basic. He will be a GM after that. Looking forward to getting to know you all!

I am new here and my son has not left for GL yet, but he leaves July 29 and then will go to GM school there as well.  Just looking for any info/advice on what to expect in this new "world" I am about to enter as a Navy Mom...

Mine made GM1!  (Petty Officer 1)  He's worked hard and been in for nine years to finally make it.

Hello all... it's been a while since I have been on here.  Today is the anniversary of my son swearing in and going to GL.  A lot has happened since then.  At least I have traveled which is new for me.  We went to San Diego in February for his graduation from "C" school.  We were crazy and drov ehis truck to him from Florida.  Nothing like a cross country drive.  He is still excited about his job and what he does.  He is on a CG stationed in San Diego.  They just got out of the yard after having some work done.  He is disappointed however that he has not been out to sea yet... after a year.  Hopefully they will soon.

To Dawn:

Yes this does happen from time to time.  The reason being is that sometimes the classes get so full that they have to sometimes put people on hold.  When this happens he/she will then sometime be put somewhere else on base as for kind of a hold job until they can get a class opening up for new people.  For the GM's its not really that common but for the FC's they get put on hold all the time.  Sometimes the jobs they will be doing is call facilities where they help out around the base cleaning up or shoveling snow.  Just tell him/her to stay out of trouble cause when most people end up going on hold they tend to get into trouble because they have so much free time on their hands.

Something else he might be able to do is get like 4 guys together that are living on the ship and get a 4 bedroom apartment.  I know he wont be recieveing any housing allowance since you have to be at least an E-5 or married but if they do that then it is a lot better then staying on the ship.  I dont know how much rent is out there for a 4 bedroom but some of the guys here did that and they only ended up paying $200 a month and then again splitting the utilities straight down the middle.
