Members: 212
Latest Activity: Feb 14, 2020

I thought it would be great to get a group together of people who have a Gunners Mate in training or one on duty. I hope we can all give each other a little insight as to what is in store for our Navy Men and Women!!

Its sounds like the ship was in dry dock for some major workups.  Do you know if its still in the ship yards?  If it is still in the yards then most likely because he is an E-3 or below he will have to stay on the ship.  Sometimes they do have what they call a barge that everyone will move to until the ship is ready.  They also sometimes allow people to stay in the Base Enlisted Quarters (BEQ) but it does have limited rooms so they will usually work their way down starting with rank and then seniority.  Until they are ready to do sea trials they will work on reconditioning different spaces on the ship.  Even if the Reagan is still in the yards they will still go out to sea for training and systems testing.

Gunnie430 - my son graduates C school in SD in early February and then he will report to his ship.  It was in dry dock but apparently now in the water.  What does he do until it actually leaves?  Will he live on the ship when he reports in a few weeks?  His cruiser is part of the Ronald Reagan strike group.  I believe that the Ronald Reagan might be getting worked on, what will the cruiser do until that is done?

First you should know that when a ship is being decommissioned it is first taken to the yards so they can pull most of the equipment off the ship so they can ether reuse it or it needs to be destroyed because of national security.  So when someone gets orders to a decom ship it means they are going there to pretty much strip the ship clean of any technology.

There are also a wide range of different schools for a Gunners Mate.  The school they get all depends on what command they are going to and where they are needed on the ship/shore.  There are schools on the east and west coast that teach the same thing due to it being more cost effective.  Some schools or NEC's (Navy Enlisted Classification) or most critical, more demanding, then others.  A good school to get is 0814 (Crew Served Weapons Instructor) however, that person must be at least an E-5 or higher.  I myself am currently in Crane, IN for 9536 (Naval Special Warfare Armorer) school.  When a sailor goes to reenlist they must do what we call a Perform to Serve in order to be eligible to reenlist.  Basically they take a look at the persons enlist file (Basically their permanent record since they have been in the Navy) to determine whether that person is worth keeping or not.  So depending on what critical schools, NJP's, EVAL's, warfare device or not, if they have ever done a deployment, and sometimes awards your sailor may then have a better chance of staying in.

Just so you know I have been in the Navy for 9 years now and I plan to make it a career.  I have a lot of knowledge about the Gunners Mate rate so if you want to ask me a question then please feel free to fire away.

I noticed some conversation on travel. my son had 2 pay 4 his ticket bk home & bk 2 G.L. the navy then purchased his ticket from G.L. 2 hawaii. He'll be there a few years. He's an AAA GM. They touch all the weapons from what I gather. If anyone has anymore details on it that would b great. You know how boys are, very little detail.

Found out my sons ship doesn't dry dock until late Feb. He will be on 2 sails before then. His first starts on the 18th. He just called today & let me know his officer was able to get him into the barracks. He's excited but its not home. He's been staying on the ship. He was really bummed he has no sheets or pillow & has to go purchase them. The things they take for granted. The remainder of his group will be returning from holiday leave Friday so he's supper excited so he doesn't have duty day every 3 days, it will be every 6 days.

Joanie, I talked to my son tonight.  The Navy is providing a commercial airline ticket.  He said that something had to be missing with the paperwork.  He's staying at a motel and gets $24 a day for meals.  It is strange since it's your son's superior too.

dawnl, there's a lot of info in the discussions above.  My son is or was (he doesn't tell me a lot) attached to a SEAL team when he was deployed recently, but he wasn't with them.  He said he didn't even see them where he was.  I suspect that he went to visit them occasionally, but he never told me that.  He took care of weapons and ammo.

My son is at A School at GL right now.  He is working hard to finish high in his class as he wants to be a riverine or embedded with a seals team.  I am not really familiar with any of this or the job itself but I am so very proud of him!!

He and his superior went on this trip...They were supposed to stay in barracks, but the base did not have any rooms available for them to stay in for this school....All of this was arranged about 3 months prior....They submitted all the paperwork when they returned but neither of them was reimbursed...Tyler also had to drive his truck up there...He could not ride with his superior due to difference in rank...

Comment by Ruth, Gun's Mom on January 3, 2013 at 1:21pm

Why hasn't he been reimbursed?  Something doesn't sound right.  I sent this on to my son.  I just know the Navy is flying him there, but don't know whether it's an airline ticket or Navy transport.  I will ask more questions. Why would your son stay in a hotel?

Comment by Joanie Tyler's Mom(133 Bees) on January 2, 2013 at 8:48pm

Tyler went for some training  at NSWC Crane in Sept of 2011....High hotel prices and food prices then...He had to pay upfront for all his expenses and still has not been reimbursed...

My son will be leaving the east coast for SW Indiana for some training.  I googled the Naval base there--who knew?

Located on the third largest naval installation in the world, NSWC Crane’s total focus is to support the Warfighter by leveraging its technical capabilities for the
rapidly changing combat environment.
