They can take time off, but traveling to the west coast wouldn't be permitted, unless there were special considerations (family emergency, wedding, etc...).

Thanks Mark...

sorry i ask a lot of questions. Im new to this whole A school thing. and since my bf just started hes not pumping out a lot of information. Thanks for answering all my questions though

Hi Sash,
Yes, they do, unless they are reporting directly to a "C" school. You don't mention your bf's rate, but if he's SECF, only the very top (I think maybe top ST, FT and NavET) get a "C" school before going to a boat. MTs go to "C" school in Kings Bay, I believe. Anyway - if they get orders to a boat after "A" school, it's standard to get two weeks of leave to do whatever. Another note though - they do have to do it on their own dime. The Navy only pays for travel to their duty station, if they want to change their travel itinerary to include a trip home, they have to pay for the difference out of their own pocket.

Congrats cnavywf09 and happy b'day to your little one! I'm hoping you'll stay active here after you move, and look forward to hearing your posts with an "insider" view of life in Groton. Sounds like a great day!

Hi Marty,
The info about ATT (Advanced Technical Training) and TCNO you have is correct. "A" school is another matter though. ET/NAV, Sonar, and FT "A" schools are all eighteen weeks. If your son arrived in Groton in October, he'll be done with "A" school in September. If he is at or near the very top of his class, he can get a "C" school before leaving Groton. I don't know anything else about "C" school though; my son left after his sonar "A" school this past October.
