OPSEC - Navy Operations Security

Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind. In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships." OPSEC is everyone's responsibility.

DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.

DO be smart, use your head, always think OPSEC when using texts, email, phone, and social media, and watch this video: "Importance of Navy OPSEC."

Hello everyone and welcome to the Navy!!! This Group was started for the loved one of DEPPERS leaving in the month of October (although everyone is welcome).......What year you say? Well ......any year!

If you have October ship out issues/questions etc., need specific information, (or have some to share) or just want to talk to someone that is where you are, with a Recruit leaving for and arriving in BC in October, ...then this is the place to be. :-)

Remember, don't "miss 'em while you're with them!" :) Make the most of every precious moment together before they leave. This will be a big transition for both of you! We'll be here for you every step of the way...

Once your recruit has arrived at RTC, the next stop here is to join the group Boot Camp for Moms (and loved ones) Hangout and ask questions in this group until your form letter arrives.

***New news just out today (9/25/19) from the US Navy Recruit Training Command FaceBook page:

Attention families and friends of RTC: Previously, upon arrival to boot camp, recruits would box up their civilian belongings and ship it to their choice of destination. Our new procedure now has those boxes being stored locally and will be returned to the recruits the day before graduation. The new procedure went into effect this week beginning with Div. 409 in Training Group 52.

Approx two to three weeks after your recruit arrives you will receive the "Form Letter". The form letter will include their Ship# , DIV #, their mailing address, PIR date, and the Security Access Form. The Security Access form needs to be completed and sent back to your recruit ASAP. Keep this letter in a safe place, it has the information you will need.

The date that is on the form letter is the official date for your Recruit's Training Groups PIR (graduation), Things can always change for an individual Recruit (due to illness, injury, failure to pass a final test etc.)! So, we always recommend that you plan, if possible, to purchase Refundable or Exchangeable plane tickets.

After you have received the form letter, join the group for your recruits PIR. There you can ask questions about PIR, training, hotels etc.Those groups will be posted in the Boot Camp for Mom's group.

**It is very important that your future Sailor be physically fit prior to shipping to the RTC (these are new standards beginning 1/1/2018) and that he be able to pass an initial run test. See Navy Fitness Standards"The initial run standard is evaluated on the 1.5 mile run of the first Physical Fitness Assessment (PFA) at boot camp. The initial run standard for male recruits will be 16 minutes 10 seconds and 18 minutes 37 seconds for female recruits."

My son tested into the nuke program at MEPS, but I remember him talking about the pool training for SEAL and Diver and that you wouldn't know right away, but I also read that they could be put in that division if there was an interest especially if he went to some of the pool training before he left.

I was surprised the PIR wasn't going to be until the 13th either. But...I'll take that day over the 20th, which was what I heard at first.

Comment by elleng on October 24, 2013 at 7:17am: Thank you for that information Holly/Ship 02 Div 906! I was assuming PIR was 12/6... good to know it might be 12/13. Is your son in Div 906? Is that special ops & they usually graduate a week later? My son's first choice was to be a Diver, but I thought you had to get chosen for that after the fact due to the physical requirements.

Comment by Holly MA Mom on October 23, 2013 at 9:41pm: Hi elleng. My son left on the same day from Atlanta and I got my call at 1:20 am on the 11th. There have been several Moms from the same date that got letters but several of us that haven't. The PIR date for the ones that already got their letters was 12-6 but I called our recruiter today and found out that our PIR date is !2-13. You may want to try to call your recruiter tomorrow just so you have an address to start sending some letters to.

I think many of us share your sentiment. So hard to say goodby and walk away. My son left on the 21st. Overnight our family dynamic changed, my poor husband is now the only man in the house. Hang in there momma our kids are doing a great thing and I know for me I have never been more proud!

Comment by Josh's Mom on October 23, 2013 at 8:25pm: My son left for bootcamp yesterday. This is so hard. I just feel so empty. I did get the call telling me he made it there and that I should receive his KIB box next week. Can't wait for his next call. I'm sure it will be 3 or 4 weeks though.

We received his box last week and are anxious to get the form letter and a letter from him. I haven't seen a message that anyone who has a son or daughter that arrived around the same time has received their 1st letter or form letter. I'm hoping any day now!

Putting the military suspension on my sons phone was very difficult to do as well. It's funny how those little things sneak up and punch you in the gut. Is this your only child that joined the navy? Where will your son be going to for his "A" school? My son is the oldest of four kids and he will be doing his schooling in Witicha Falls, Texas.
