Sub volunteer just means that he volunteered for sub duty.  Apparently they don't put Sailors on subs unless they are willing.  He is hoping to be based out of Groton, CT but we will see...

Linda- what is a sub volunteer? Joanne's son is on a sub. Where will he be based out of do you know? Does he want to be on a sub?

Betsy - hope your drive to NM is going s planned. Prayers for safe travels over the next few days.

Lunch in Sept sounds like a good idea.

I'm reading all of the recent posts about deployment with trepidation as my time will be coming soon. Joey will graduate Nov 21 and will get his orders. He is a sub volunteer but he doesn't know if he will be assigned to a sub. I'm not looking forward to his first deployment but I will be there to see him off...

Lori, thanks. We definitely need to plan a lunch in Sept.

In answer to your question, nope, my husband has to fly both ways because he can only take 5 days off from work.   :(  I am planning on staying out there until that last tear is shed as I watch Adam walk down the jet way in Albuquerque airport.

Betsy- we do indeed need another lunch. And a big Navy hug for all those who can make it!

Prayers going your way. Smart man your husband! Dianne agreed! On the return journey will your husband then be able to help with the driving?

Safe travels my dear.

Lori, yes I always remember the thought that nothing is ever set in stone in the Navy, so things can change quickly.  Thank you for your prayers and kind thoughts, they really do mean a lot.  I fill up already just knowing that I will need to go through that "so long" once again very soon.  I'm thinking that I will need another Maryland mom lunch when I get back.  :)

I leave tomorrow and my husband won this battle, as I'll only be driving about 8 hours each day.  I will arrive in Albuquerque on Tuesday.  Adam flies in to Alb. on Wed. and my husband flies in on Thursday.  Car is all gassed up, packed up and ready to roll tomorrow morning.

Betsy, I'm sorry the time with Adam will be shortened, at least it's only by 3 days. The last time Paul was on leave [ in Dec] before he joined the Vinson I thought I'd have longer with him too but it got changed last minute and he had to call the airlines to change the date. We take what we do get and make the most don't we? At the airport knowing it would be months before I saw him again [ as he was going back to SD for the deployment] was hard. Because of their status airlines let us go to the gate [ you do that right?] and we can sit with them just that last bit of time. That helps. As the gate calls "last boarding" is the hardest- don't want that hug to end! I will be with you in spirit Betsy as I can feel my eyes fill with tears knowing how it will be. My momma's heart and prayers are with YOU too!.

I agree with your husband. You will be by yourself- that is hard enough. Driving 10 hours- that's brutal! Be safe and don't push it if you feel yourself getting sleepy. There will be no one to take turns with. Do keep in touch so we know how you are.

I'll tell Dianne. I need to call her anyway. She is understanding as we mentioned Adam's going on the Stennis and the possibility of Paul's ship joining it in the Spring. We can't focus on the "what if's" as it doesn't help. We don't know the future- only God does.

Joanne, here is the link for the Stennis site. http://www.navyformoms.com/group/testgroup

If your friend wants to join it, just let her know that they will have to approve her.  Christmas in Sept. is a great idea.  ((hugs)) I'm sure it must be hard getting yourself ready for the next stage in Kevin's life.

Lori, thank you for your prayers.  I will definitely tell Adam that.  I really do hope that Paul doesn't have to go back there, especially for 10 months.  ((hugs))  As you said, things do change, so who knows what will happen?  Adam's ship was told about 4 different things in the course of about 2 months.  Adam did always say to me though, from the very beginning that he thought they would go for the 8 months.

Well, our 2 weeks have been reduced to 11 days now.  He just asked me to book him back to WA on the 19th, instead of the 21st of Aug, because he wanted a couple more days before he goes back to work.  It's ok, I'll take what I can get, while I can get it.  I just told him that he owes me 2 extra days after the deployment, lol.

I start my drive to NM on Saturday, and I will take 4 days, instead of the usual 3.  My husband is a big ole sissy and doesn't want ME driving 10 hours a day.      Just because he can't handle 10 hours driving, why can't I do it?  I will be by myself, so he shouldn't care.  Oh well, at least I know that I will get to each place in daylight, so I guess that's a good thing.  I'll keep in touch while I'm gone. Lori, if you happen to talk to Dianne, please tell her I will be back on the PIR groups when I get back from NM.  I'll try to email her, I'm laying low on those groups while I deal with Adam's deployment.  I don't want to put any negative vibes on those groups.  I'm having a hard time dealing with this right now. Thanks

Betsy, got a chance to talk to Paul yesterday. They are keeping the sailors busy as the Vinson gets overhauled. When I asked about the Stennis [ the Vinson had taken their place back in Nov when the Stennis left the gulf] he said there's talk about the Vinson joining them in the spring or taking their place again. Also talk that their next deployment could be 10 months which he said would be awful. But no one knows- there's always talk. Things constantly change.

I forgot you had mentioned that Adam came home in May. That's great that he got to spend time with some of the family here. To have 2 whole weeks with him!!! The last time I had 2 weeks with Paul was in Dec before he left to join the Vinson. The 3 days in San Diego at the Homecoming was not nearly enough. The good byes get harder I think.

Your sailor will have my prayers when he is out on deployment for sure. Tell him that- another Navy mom knows what it's like having their son over there and many prayers will be sent for his safety.

Hi Lori, thank you for your prayers.  Needless to say, I am very worried about this depIoyment.  I have been reading the Stennis group on here and a lot of the ladies seem to be very concerned about this deployment, even more so than the last one.  :(

I'm sorry to hear about your surgery.  I hope you are recovering well and that it wasn't a serious issue.  ((Hugs)) I will pray that your pain subsides very soon.

My son is going to take his leave in New Mexico because we thought that was the best plan.  My husband and I were planning on going out there in August to see two of our other kids anyway, so we all decided that it made more sense for us to go out there this time.  He also did want to have time with his siblings and friends out there.  We also have another daughter living in Colorado now so we are going to drive up there for a weekend while we are out west.   Adam did get home for leave in May and was able to see my parents, my grandchildren, our oldest daughter and other relatives at that time.  I am driving out to New Mexico starting probably either Aug. 3 or Aug. 4 since Adam flies into Albuquerque on Aug. 8.  I will be there probably by the 7th, so I can pick him up from the airport.  My husband is going to fly out there on the 9th, but due to work, can only stay for a few days.  My daughter (that we just moved to CO) asked me to bring some small furniture out there for her, so that's why I'm driving, plus we will have my car out there for our use.  Adam has leave until Aug. 22, so I will have 2 weeks with him.  I won't leave there until he is back on the plane to Seattle.
