Betsy, I just read in the Washington Post [ front page] an article about the Iranians and our ships. In the article in mentions that the Stennis is being deployed 4 months ahead of schedule because of the growing conflict. I immediately thought of your son and am saying prayers for him.
I haven't been on here in awhile as I had major surgery 2 weeks ago and my energy level is still low [ and pain level still high].
I hope all are doing well. The summer seems to be flying by. Betsy please let us know any updates. When will your son get to come home?
Linda, it's a good thing I did choice SW, lol. I have already changed his flight twice. ;) But the change was for a great reason, since his Captain actually told him to take more leave days than he was planning to in the first place. Now I will get to see him for 2 full weeks! Yippee!.
I think Moms of our men & women in the military deserve some kind of medal or something because this is a hard job (and twice as hard for you, Joanne). We all know that our kids will grow up and leave but being in the military brings so many worries and long separations. I think the hardest part for me was knowing when Joey was leaving and trying to make the best of it. Joanne, I hope you have good times and lots of great memories until Kevin leaves. And if the Army can't have a great place like this website to help us get through this, we will fill that gap :)
Betsy, Southwest is my favorite choice when I fly since they will change flights with no penalty. I hope everyone gets to the right place on time - enjoy the time with your family!
Joanne, my heart goes out to you as you contemplate the leaving of Kevin. I remember how hard it was for you to just open Jason's box when it came. You will have to search down deep for that inner strength that God gives us mother's as you enter a whole new phase of sending him off. You would never have thought it possible 2 years ago but you made it through then- you will do so now. As soon as I recover from this surgery we are going to get together and you can cry or vent or do whatever you feel like but like Betsy said -we are here for you.
Betsy- I hope everything falls into place for you and your husband to spend time with that boy of yours.
Hugs to all my Navy mom friends.
Joanne, ((Hugs)) We absolutely do get it, so you are not alone. I know that I don't have 2 sons in the military, but I do have my youngest son (who left for BC at 18) and my future son in law in the military, so I can totally understand how you are feeling right now. We will all be here every step of the way for you when Kevin leaves. Being a military mom is the hardest job in the world and only those who live it, truly do understand it.
Linda, what a hard day that must have been for all of them. ((hugs)) to your son, his family and all of his Navy friends. That's very nice that they are able to spend time with his family afterwards.
My son is trying right now to take leave before they are deployed. Hopefully, things will come into place for me to be able to see him before he leaves. Since 3 of our children live in NM and CO respectively, if he gets his leave chit approved, he will fly from Bremerton to NM. I leave tomorrow for the roadtrip to CO with my daughter and will fly back from there on July. 23. A couple of weeks after I return to MD, I will then drive out to NM. My husband can't take that much time off from work, so once again I will be doing the 3 day trip by myself. But nothing will stop me from doing this to see my sailor. My husband will fly out for a few days, while we are in New Mexico. Since I will have my car out there, I will also drive my sailor to see his sister in CO for a couple of days too. Please pray that all of this can happen. He is still waiting for his leave approval, but I have booked his flight. Thank goodness Southwest had awesome prices from Seattle to Albuquerque and if by chance, he can't go, he can always use the flights later, (without penalties). Fingers and toes crossed for approval.
I spoke with my son tonight and there will be a memorial service in Ballson Spa tomorrow morning for Zane Stotesbury. Zane's family will be there for the service. It is going to be a tough day for Zane's family and all of the Sailors tomorrow. Zane touched so many lives and will be missed so much.
Joey sounded pretty good when I spoke with him tonight. Joey was ahead in his work prior to the accident and is still on track but not too far ahead. The Sailors will not have to return to class after the service which will give them some time to spend with Zane's family.
Lori, oh ok, I just had never heard of LW. That's great that your mom likes it.
My son is ok with the news, because just like a young person, he is thinking about all the money he will save, lol. I'm not so great with the news, obviously. He is a CT on the Stennis carrier. He likes it so far, but he's only been out for a couple of replenishment cruises, which are only a month at a time. I was fortunate to talk with him tonight on FB chat, as they were on Sunday Holiday routine and were allowed to get on there. It was just what I needed too. Even though we obviously couldn't talk about the plans for the ship, it felt so great to talk with him today.
Betsy, Leisure World is a large retirement community not to far from me. My mom loves it. The local hospital where I work gets the majority of patients from there as there is also a nursing home in it as well.
I'm sorry that you didn't get good news about your sons deployment. Isn't that so like the Navy to change things at the last minute! How is your son taking the news? What kind of ship is he on and what does he do?
My prayers are with all our sailors.
Oh Linda, how awful! ((hugs)) to you and your son. I will keep his family in my prayers.
Lori, what is Leisure World?
Donna, Woohoo! A new grandchild is such sweet news!
Joanne, What a great sendoff to Kevin. I can't wait to hear all about it.
Debbie, glad to hear that you are all back on now.
Well, my news is not good news. My son's ship will be deployed very soon. They were supposed to only be going for 4 months starting in Dec., but as we all know, this is the Navy and things change quickly. Well, they definitely changed. They are out now and we have been told that they will only have about a week or 10 days after they get back. Then out they go for 7-8 months.
We have a code for information and when I typed our code, he confirmed that they will "definitely" be going this time. :( I was hoping to get another visit before he left in Dec., but now that has been bumped up 4 months, so I know that won't happen. Please keep all of our sailors in your prayers. I know many Navy moms who have not heard from their sailors in over a month. Things must be happening out there somewhere.
Linda, this is tragic news. My heart goes out to this young man's family. Also for your son who watched his room mate and friend lose his life. This is why I hate motorcycles. I wish my son didn't feel it necessary to get own one. He said it's cheaper in SD to have one. Then I read this about your son's friend and it makes me anxious all over again.
Joanne, that sounds awesome taking Kevin to Ireland!
