I found this online, so maybe it can explain it more. http://www.priceline.com/customerservice/faq/howitworks/air.asp
Lori, Yes, you have to take the flight that give you. They say on the website that they try to book with no more than one connection and if they don't have anything, you can put in another option of 2 connections. I don't think you do have the option of saying no, but I could be wrong. But, I think once you put in the credit card and they find you a flight, you are confirmed for that flight. I could be wrong, but I'm not sure, because I was happy with the option that they found for Adam.
I'm so sorry to hear that the group for Paul's ship isn't welcoming. It's so hard when you rely on people who can help and they aren't that friendly. ((hug))
Adam is still awaiting his first duty station, so no ship yet. I wish I could help, so sorry.
Betsy, thanks for all the info. When i put in my bid I give them my credit card and THEY chose the flight? What if it's not a good one [ like it makes a dozen connections] i don't have the option to say no? Booking it is going to be so last minute as it is and since it's from the West Coast i don't want him to have to spend hours and hours getting from there to here. But if it's a really good price it might be worth it. Is Adam assigned to a ship? Has he been at sea? I have so many questions. The ship he's been assigned to has a group but I haven't found them very welcoming so haven't asked much.
lori, I'm so excited for you to have Paul home soon. I hope you hear something soon.
With Priceline, I just go into the little box called "Name Your Own Price" and with Adam's flight, I just based it on what I have seen regularly throughout the year. I also looked at the prices on the other travel sites like Expedia, Orbitz, Travelocity, etc. and then reduced my bid about $400 less than those prices. When my husband went down to Pensacola for his A school graduation in Sept (when rates were low) he paid about $300 round trip so I just added $50 to to that price as my price. The flights that they will look at, will leave from their area anywhere from 6a.m. on until 10p.m., so if there is a connection anywhere they take that into consideration. Adam has to be back in Pensacola by 0700 on the 27th and his flight back to Pensacola will arrive at 13:30 on the 26th, so his flights worked out just fine. The only drawback on Name your own price is that you put in your credit card info when you put in your bid, so if they accept your bid, you have to use the flight that they give you. As long as you are ok with the 6a.m. to 10p.m. time frame, you should be fine. Since Paul is traveling so far, I would put in his arrival day as a full day ahead of his deadline. That way, if there is a delay in travel due to weather issues, etc. he will arrive back in time. Since my Adam is only traveling to FL, I wasn't as concerned about delays and he will have about 17 hours after his flight gets in. So hopefully, even if there are weather issues, he will be able to get back on time. I had always used Priceline Name your own price for rental cars, but this is the first time that I have chanced it for flights. I'm really glad that I did, because it has saved us $400-$500 on the cost of his flight. I didn't even think yesterday that we (or Adam) could even afford to get him home at this point, so I'm so happy that it worked out.
Betsy that is wonderful news! I know how happy you must be. I am still waiting for Paul to get his written orders before we can look at airfare. I'm praying like crazy they come today. The next step is for some kind of "sea duty screening" that he hopes can be done quickly. THEN i can look at tickets. It's cutting it real close though. I want to know more about that Priceline Betsy. How do you know how much to "name?" He's coming from SD.
Once his leave is over he will be flown out to the ship at sea. So I am sooo grateful he gets to come home.
My son's leave was finally approved. Woohoo! He is coming home on Dec. 17 (which just happens to be the same day he graduated from BC last year, lol) and he will go back to Pensacola on Mon. Dec. 26. I got a great price on Priceline for his airfare of $350. I did the "Name your own price" because all of the travel sites were all giving me prices of about $700-$900. I can't believe that Priceline accepted $350! Yippee!
Thanks everyone for your help!! He's coming into Washington DC or Maryland on the 16th. I think I might have to drive down and get him. It's a 4 hr drive down and back. I was hoping to get him a ride as close to Maryland as I can.
Sorry Joanne you're not feeling well. Girl you need a vacation from your body!
I am NOW in the mood to do Christmas since Paul is coming home. If he had called and said he wasn't I wasn't even going to get a tree. Two of our other kids live far away and couldn't make it. So I need to get busy once my finals at school are over.
Lori, Woohoo! that's great news!
Joanne, me either. Just starting some online shopping today. I hope you can get some relief from the doctor tomorrow. ((hugs))
I just got a call from my son. His orders will have him staying in SD and stationed on the Vincent which is a carrier. Not what he wanted but because his orders got lost [!] the Vincent has already left [ for 7 months!] and he will be able to come home for Christmas now! This is one happy momma right now!
Joanne- we need to talk.
