Hell, my name is Chrissy. My husband left for boot on July 28th. He is in Div 319. I have 2 children, ages 7 and 5. Just wanting to get in touch with other wives out there. Have not received the DEERS form yet. About how long does that take to receive??
My son and I are on tricare prime and we are both seen by a doctor of our choice in the civilian sector. Tricare should give you a list of approved health care providers in your area. Growing up a navy brat I only was ever seen by a civ. hospital once and that was when the military sent me to UCSD for my heart surgery as a child. Other than that I only ever knew naval hospitals. However, seeing how quickly and easily I can get appointments at my doc now and how the waiting before the appt is very short...I am happy that Balboa told me I had to be seen off base....and because they farmed us out and we are prime, they cover everything...since you are about 40 min from a base, you may be able to remain prime and choose your own doc as long as they accept tricare....
So if you are married to your Sailor (judging by your name "AO wife" I take it you are!) then you can get housing....and you just qualify for different sized houses/appts...my hubbs and I don't have any kids so we qualified for a 2 bedroom place, I believe if you have kids you can get a 3 or 4 bedroom. Also some complexes are Officers only, but most are Enlisted only, some are Chiefs and above....it just depends.
Also you can still live in military housing and save some of your BAH....not all the housing complexes take all your BAH....there are some that have a flat rate of, say 1600 a month (incl utilities), and if your BAH is, say 1940 (E3), then you can pocket the difference! Just depends on which housing complex you live in, there are lots, I believe there are 40 or so complexes that Lincoln Housing has here in the San Diego area.
Thanks guys!!! I'm learning so much. I would love to know the better areas I just can't wait to get there!!! Tropikal I'm not sure yet we are still waiting for all the information I will let you guys know as soon as I do tho thanks to all of you for helping me out!!! What are the qualifacations for housing? I did not realize you had to qualify for housing???
I love in san diego my husband is in school. I can help also if anyone needs help I have been living here all my life and know which areas are better than others. It might be smarter to just live off base and take the BAH because then if you have extra money left over you guys can save it.
