Most of us have been posting discussions segregated by ship and division, but maybe we can get to know each other based on our PIR date--we will all be in Great Lakes on the same weekend.

Mother Always, I wish I had some helpful advise. I understand about the distance. I have flown from Dallas to San Juan. I think the cost is the one way flight. I have looked up prices, and have found that one way tickets sometimes cost more than a round trip. You may want to just do the plane trip with a stop to get your son. Keep looking.

I have a mess in my mind, because I live in PR,my other son lives in Orlando Fl;he wants me to go there, pick him up, take the Amtrak train (my idea)because I hate to fly,I get sick and I already flew from PR to Fl at the time.We talked already with employees from Amtrax, they told us to mention PIR,one of them graduated from GL...The trip take about 2 days,it's going to be "sightseeing", if there is something more to see than snow...Then return by plane,I thought of that today, about the return.I was looking for plane tickets a while ago,it's expensive, either by train or air, because of the distance...Help!!!!!!!!!!!

I really enjoyed my stay at the Navy Lodge. It is very close to the RTC. No shuttle of any kind though. So many of the hotels have shuttle service to the PIR. Since there is one every week, so many of the hotels stay busy because of us! lol
I know that the Ramada Inn has a Meet and Greet every Thurs. night. It is wonderful and also free to all, not just guests of the hotel. (drinks are not free to non guests)

Does the Navy Lodge have a shuttle?

Good Afternoon Ladies. I hope all has had a good Thanksgiving. I did something different. I ate out. I had my phone next to me the whole time, but no call. I was thinking that I might do the same for Christmas. I was working it in my head that for Christmas, I there would be five of us. Then I realized that there will only be four of us. Laurence will be home, but not Richard. (A school closes, but not boot camp.) RIght after that the song, "I'll be Home for Christmas" came on. I couldn't keep it in. There I was in Golden Corral, crying.
As for a hotel, I stayed at the Navy Lodge in Oct. and plan to stay there again in Jan. I also flew into Milwaukee. I found it was cheeper. I rented a car, and it was easy to drive everywhere.

Happy Thanksgiving to all! I hope we all get calls from out recruits!
My younger son in A school called me today! (YEA) He has his cell phone and can call. He is in GL (Corpsman school) I asked if he thought his brother would be able to call and he said he didn't thinks so. He said that the RDCs are not nice people and since they have no life, they don't care if the recruits have one or not. (Response edited to remove "Sailor talk")
Oh well, I can still hope!
As for calling cards, the recruits can buy them at the NEX. I remember when I was there for my son's PIR, and he told us to hurry up. A division was coming in and they would all be at the counter to buy a calling card. At least they were all polite! They all went straight to the counter, bought their card and then went to stand in line to wait their turn. So, if you were not able to send a calling card with your recruit, they can still get one. Ask how long they have to talk. If they have a while, I found that I could hang up and call right back. They can answer the pay phone, and it wont take away there minutes on their card.( I called the number that showed up on my caller ID.)

Regarding the calling card, before you send it, scratch off the covering to reveal the PIN code, and then photocopy the card--or write down both the number and PIN on the cardboard backer the card was packaged in (it has all the customer service information). The card may get lost but the numbers are really all that is needed to continue using the minutes on the card.

Have a good day today. Remember that we are grieving because our loved one is not present today; there are those who are mourning the loss of someone precious. We have much to be thankful for.

Blessings on you day.
