Elizabeth, here is a site that I found helpful.   STA stands for Seaman to Admiral.  Best wishes to your sailor.  :-)

Hello all!  My sailor finally classed up and started yesterday.  He is excited and looking forward to what he is going to learn.  He wants to apply for officer training.  He seems to know all about how to go about that, and I didn't want to ask him too much, but is there a group or site here where I could learn more about the process.  I like to know what I'm talking about when I talk with him and other!

Such hands-on sons B'sNukeMom

I did send my son something that went to the Rickover and he got comments from his instructor. I used to have an Art Supply store and he requested a  20 pen set of micro tip permanent colored pens. He used them to draw out circuits. the colors helped map it out. They are expensive but I only paid half cause it was my store. They are tiplus pens that are .03 tip.

Calculators are like golf equipment - never buy one for somebody without knowing for sure it's exactly what they want.  Power school does not demand a fancy calculator, and as Christy said, some will not be allowed.  There are a lot of little differences between brands that can be frustrating to get used to - letting them pick one up at the NEX is a great idea.  15$ will get them all the calculator they will need

My son also said he bought one for $60 there in GC and used it for both A school and power school.  They won't need a laptop though - that's just for their personal use - movies, games, etc.

Good question.  My son used a program on his laptop all through high school.  My daughter borrowed one to take her SAT.

Hi All - Happy Monday!

Cerise - sounds like you had a great time with your sailor and family!  Nice that you were able to take a road trip to FL with him.

CEWnukegf - hopefully you got your questions answered regarding overnight leave/Holiday leave, etc!  Make sure you look at "Your Sailor's Schedule Upon Arrival to GC" above.  It explains the different phases and what they can do....

BQB - unfortunately the boys didn't have enough time to head into NYC. Friday they visited downtown Ballston Spa & Saratoga Springs. They made it to the horse races on Saturday and to the Baseball Hall of Fame (with a few other sailors) on Sunday.  Today college son flies home....quick trip but they had a great time.  Last night we got to FaceTime with both of them which was very nice for hubby & I!

Here's the last of the pics from his trip (I promise LOL):

Heading to the airport today...

Hello all!!

For those asking about christmas and new year liberty.  The school does close down.  Some sailors will have christmas at home and some will get new years time home.  Half goes one time and the other half the next.  I dont know how they pick who gets what and I dont know if they have to have enough days of liberty built up.  My son came home for christmas when he was in A school back in 2011.  Not sure if anything has changed.
