Congrats, J's mom! I know my son is ahead of yours but I feel like I have been on the journey with you. I'm happy for your sailor.

Regarding the Home vs Hope Depot, when my son was maybe a freshman in high school, we drove past a Home Depot with two of the letters burned out, so it read HO DEPOT. I didn't even notice it until he says "Boy, I didn't think you could go out and buy them like that." Good grief.

Is there an information, like a spreadsheet or something that details a sailors income and deductions during the first few months of their enlistment?

My son is trying to setup his budget for this time period, (income vs. car payment and a couple of credit cards he wants to pay off).

Any help is appreciated!

$655 was already taken out from NEX/XCHNGE DEBT for uniforms. Additionally, Fed taxes, Soc Sec ,Medicare, and State Taxes were taken out of both of his first 2 paychecks. Then additional $1,000 for "mid month pay". Let's just say he didn't pocket much money at all for the entire first 5.5 weeks of military. Any ideas what he should do?? Sorry we are new to this system. Thanks!

LES - related to basic.  It may vary slightly by when they arrive at boot camp during the pay cycle, but in general two very large hits come out of pay retroactively after the first few paychecks.

First, the voluntary-mandatory ( or is it mandatory-voluntary ) clothing purchases  during Boot Camp.  Federal law says the military must provide all mandatory clothing at military expense when enlisted people enter U.S. Military service, but the Navy has a long tradition of requiring additional purchase of "voluntary clothing items" during Boot Camp that are automatically issued and automatically deducted from pay.  In the range of 400 to 1,000 dollars over the period of boot camp.  This often comes out several pay checks after it was actually issued.

Second they do not take any deductions for anything ( Federal Income taxes, State Income taxes, Social Security or anything else ) out of the first one to three pay checks and they "catch up" on these deductions out of later pay checks.

Just wondering if someone knows the answer to this. After PIR last weekend, my son showed my husband and I his earnings statement from May and June while at Boot Camp and on the June statement he had over $1,000 taken out in deductions titled " Mid-Month-Pay. He was at RTC from May 21st thru July 19th.

He has tried unsuccessfully to contact the dfas.mil information line and waited on hold for some time. Did this happen to others/ what is this for?? Or could it be a huge mistake in their payment dept. Thanks for any info on this.

Yes, i wish it is Hope Depot, but we have to face the daily life by shopping Home Depot instead.

guanggao  What does Hope Depot sell?  Positive things to make one feel better? LOL thought that was a funny typo.

Katherine21  My son is just two weeks ahead of you. My son has been there since 6-23 and started Classes just two weeks ago.

I have a question--

Is there any way Navy mom get any kind ID so we can receive military discount or use Navy Exchange? Hope Depot offers 10% discount. My sailor's cell phone is with our family plan and I was told that AT%T offers 15% to military. Any advise is appreciated.
