Nuts or not, it can be done.  But, your basic point is correct; there must be some loss of warfighting capability,  but it can be offset in this case.  The thing about the Virginia and later classes on the drawing board is, they have smaller crew sizes because of automation with the force finally employing 21st century technology to its fullest.  Smaller crew size = smaller berthing areas = more room for heads, showers AND weapons systems.

I do not think women will inevitably be on attack submarines. If they want to have unisex sleeping arrangements and bathrooms, maybe. However if they insist on building a class of subs that adds separate bathrooms and sleeping quarters for females, what does that really mean? Fewer torpedoes and cruise missiles to fight wars with, all because you wasted that space on two sets of bathrooms? That would be nuts.

Comment by Mark on July 17, 2012 at 11:37pm

Connie, she is absolutely correct.  At some point, though women will inevitably be on fast attacks, but it won't be on any fast attacks built today, because they would need very expensive modification.  I have not been aboard any of the new Virginia class subs (familiar with all other classes though), but I hear that there is enough room and the crews are small enough, that the design could be tweaked to redesign berthing so that female crewmembers can be accommodated within typical American mores.  Interestingly, countries like Sweden and Australia have had women on subs for at least ten years now, without redesign, because they (at least as far as berthing arrangements go) it doesn't matter whether they're male or female.  Anyway, Virginia class boats that haven't started construction yet can probably be built to accommodate women, including enlisted, I suspect.  Your son's a little off on heads on fast attacks though...officers have one head and shower, Chiefs have their own head and shower, rest of enlisted have a main head and a couple of showers, plus another small head.  There is also usually a head for all watchstanders (officer and enlisted) in the engine room.  Oh - the CO and XO share a head and shower as well.  That description applies to fast attacks - SSGNs and SSBNs have more heads, and that is why it's doable to have female officers on board.

Dor, saying prayers for Jason and for the families.

Jo1, congrats to your son!  Um, they will only have graduation indoors if it's raining.  My son's power school graduation was last August.  Yes, it was hot.  Early in the ceremony, it was OK because it was cloudy, then it cleared up and became a bit uncomfortable.  Doesn't matter, though--it's graduation!!!

Connie, your post made me remember an article in the Navy Times recently about how new carriers will not have urinals.  There are other changes, too, but what's getting the most attention is the change in the "facilities."

Had lunch today with the mom of a nuke officer. She mentioned that fast attack subs will not have women, only the boomers will. Anybody know? Just curious, as my son has told me subs have only 2 bathrooms, one for officers and one for enlisted, and I get this funny mental image (from having grown up with 2 brothers and only one bathroom)... God help the sailor who tries to hurry a lady in the morning!!

Thanks Nancy & Linda,

I'm so excited about seeing my son!  I'm dreading the S.C. heat and humidity though.  That would be nice if graduation was inside in air-conditioning but I doubt that will happen.

Congratulations Jo1!  Enjoy, enjoy, enjoy.  Be ready for hot weather.  I wonder if they will move it indoors?  Ours was outside but it was not so hot as now.
