Robin - I grew up in Boca...waaaaaaay back in the late 60s and 70s. Actually, you can thank my father (and the other people that "ran" the city) for the Palmetto Pretzel...I know, a dubious distinction to be sure! Betsy, so funny that you live in Vero--when my Dad "retired" from Boca he went up and was Planning Director in Vero...ok...my world just got even smaller! :)

Wasn't BC grad amazing?! I still remember the energy and the pride that absolutely threatened to bust out the building! What a great day!

My son will be classing up for Power School around April 1. He's actually looking forward to it--but then again, he always was UP for a challenge!

Hi Betsy.  It's so nice to meet all of you.  Yes, I like Boca but I would love "less busy".

Hi  Robin,  Nice  to  know  there  are  more  of  us from  south  Florida.  We use  to  live  in  Boca  and  my  sons  went  to  school  there. We  are  now  in  Vero  Beach.  Less busy.  My  son  is  now  in  power  school.

A-school grad - how exciting!! I can't wait for that.  My son just graduated bootcamp last week and here I am already looking for the next milestone.

I haven't been able to skype with him because they don't have internet in their rooms yet.  I did have him text me a picture of his room.  Small, but clean:)

I live in Boca and work in Boynton Beach, practically down the street from you.  I know the next goodbye will be just as hard but can't wait to visit.  I was so excited to see him in Great Lakes and then he left again - UGH!!  I sure hope it gets easier.

Thanks for all the info and congrats to your son!

Robin, we were just there last week for our son's A-school grad. The Chief did announce "if you'd like to see an example of where your child lives..." They do/did have an "example" room. But, through Skype, I've gotten the nickel tour :)

When shipping homemade treats--as I LOVE to do--make sure you double or triple wrap them in ziploc bags. I also sent my son a supply of them in one of his care packages--for cereal, etc. They are real sticklers for making sure EVERYTHING is secure and definitely don't want ant/bug problems EWWWWW!

Where in Florida are you? I live in Greenacres (just outside of WPB). It was a loooooooong 9 hour drive to get up there last weekend, but so worth it! Just to be able to hug him put my heart at some rest. However, leaving was still hard...I waited until I got down Red Bank Road a wee bit before I pulled over and allowed myself a cry. I know eventually it will get easier...I hold onto that.

Your son may be more interested in showing you around while you are there. I have a feeling that even if my son had gone to college I wouldn't have seen his dorm or talked to him any more than I do now - he is just that way.  It drives me a little crazy, but I respect his privacy (most of the time!).

Comment by Robin - Nuke ET on March 22, 2012 at 1:20pm

Well, now I know and I won't be disappointed or surprised when we get there. Sometimes I feel better if I think he's just away at college - not so much, huh?  LOL

Comment by NavyMomLG on March 22, 2012 at 1:16pm

Robin - you will have very limited access on base.  You can not see his room, or even the building itself.  We had to park at the bowling alley/mini NEX and my son had to walk down a trail to meet us there.  You may be able to drive down the road a little further, but my son was anxious to get off base as soon as we picked him up so I didn't really see anything.

Thanks for the tip.  I'm in Florida so I can relate.  Summer is definitely on its way!

It's starting to get really warm here in Goose Creek, so take that into account when sending treats over the mail :)
