I volunteered at the Mission Serve Hiring Fair with the Duke & Duchess of Campbridge yesterday which is how I was able to attend. Bank of America was the primary sponsor of the event. The company is very supportive of the military & they hire lots of veterans. I am a member of their Military support group so I was asked if I wanted to help. Prince Willima expressed this was the most important event for him to attend during his time in Los Angeles because it is near & dear to his heart. I provided a link to event info if anyone is interested is looking at it.

Mama C - we did a "combo tour" through Palmetto Carriage Company.  It was $33 per person and included an hour long carriage tour AND a harbor tour which took us all through the harbor, Patriots Point, Fort Sumter.  The guides were very informative and it was quite relaxing.  Best part was that the tours didn't have to be on the same day.  They give you a receipt that you present when you get to each place.

We also did the Ghost & Graveyard tour and it was GREAT!!!  Not scary but our guide was really good and it was creepy.  I think it was $13  The old graveyards are really neat and I'm a sucker for graveyards anyway.  Quite a bit of walking so wear comfortable shoes for that one.

Spent 1 day at Isle of Palms on the beach and the only cost was $7 for parking. We carried a cooler with waters and cokes. Except of course we HAD to go to the restaurants for lunch and dinner BUT I did have restaurant.com gift certificates which cut the costs of the meals.

We did not go to our son's  PIR and the first time I saw my son was in A school two months ago, we could have sworn he had grown taller after six months in the Navy.  At first we thought it was just his improved posture, he stands straight and tall now.  Then, he came home for the 4th of July weekend on liberty and we saw that he actually was taller Lol.  He wore a pair of jeans he had worn before he joined the Navy and the legs were too short now .  He is now 6'3" that is if he has stopped growing yet Lol.

My son flew to Goose Creek on the Tuesday after PIR and they don't find out their flight times until late in the game, and you may have already bought your own return airline tickets to go home before Tuesday Lol.  But, if you go to PIR and they happen to be flying out to Goose Creek on Saturday while you are in Chicago  a handoff is possible.

Dor- how much did your son's Proto grad date move and if it did, how many days did it move on average?

About kids, Rosko is quite enough for me! He loves to test his limits and the vet said that he talks back to me when I tell him no. At least with a dog, I can lock him in his kennel for a couple hours and ignore his cries when I'm sick of him.

He got his first "military haircut" (as I like to call it) and now he doesn't look like a little polar bear cub anymore. Which means he can't get away with so much on his cuteness haha. I've been trying to take a picture of him shaved but he just will not sit still!!

Annemarie - Thanks for the info!  I am looking forward to seeing some of the sights my son has talked about.  He's sent some pictures of houses and churches.  What an awesome piece of history!

Josh'sMom - Why so long to see your son?  Since December?  I must've missed something somewhere.  My son left for BC 3/16 and we saw him at PIR 5/13.  There was a definite difference in his looks and demeanor after BC.  He was always a polite young man and very respectful, but to watch him at PIR addressing friends and officers was amazing!  I'm a bit biased, but he did change alot in so many ways - all for the good.

Haven't seen him since O'Hare airport 5/14.  I'm sure he's changed again since then.  After my trip I'm sure I'll be sharing some of my experiences with all of you.  I can hardly wait to see him!

Mama C: Charleston is an easily walkable city.  You can pick up a walking tour guide booklet at the visitor's center. It's  great way to see all the historic homes, buildings and churches in the city.  There's a flea/farmer's market in Marion Square just across the street from the Francis Marion Hotel.  The Fort Sumter Tour is very interesting as is the Hunley (a Civil War submarine) exhibit. Both are reasonably priced. Have a great time with your sailor!

hey Josh'sMomCindy,

don't believe what you hear...they CAN have their stuff if you meet them at the airport.  don't forget chargers.  It does have to be in an ALL BLACK, no logos, carry on size bag or backpack.  They will already be checking their seabags and garment bags and won't have any "extra room" in those. My son wanted his electric shaver, too.  We met him at about 0230 in the lobby of Midway Airport and his was the first flight out at 0600 to Charleston.  Ask for a gate pass and you'll get to have a little more time with him.  I think all the sailors were at the airport at 0230, even those that didn't have a departure until that afternoon....Best Wishes to you and your sailor.  Congrats!

Josh'sMom - My son is an EM also.  He started A School 6/13.  Good Luck with getting all his stuff to him.  PIR will be an awesome experience!
