Question on the moving (since we're looking to see if I should get a throw away car or a permanent car in a few weeks)- If we get the Navy to move us, how long does it take to get our stuff?
Comment by Emily-aaronsgirl11 on May 30, 2011 at 10:44pm

Honestly, Recruiters generally don't know what the heck they're talking about. Especially when it comes to the Nuke program. I had a recruiter call/message me several times about joining... he eventually admitted that I know more about the Navy than he does (I told him he doesn't want me anyways because I'd come with too many medical waivers). ANYWAYS.
The Nuke program works a little differently sometimes. But I believe the time limit is 3 months-- if the A school/duty station is longer than that then the Navy will pay to move the dependents (spouse, children, etc). If not, they can still move, but it won't be on the Navy's dime. Since they're guaranteed to be in Charleston for at least a year (most times more) in the Nuke program, the Navy pays to move them immediately. I've talked to lots and lots of wives and seen this happen lots of times! I think they even get part of the moving money up front, too. Then they are reimbursed later. That's for a DITY move, for a Navy move, the Navy comes and packs everything and moves it all down to SC for them-- They're just responsible for the plane ticket/gas.

He'll find this all out in Bootcamp. My suggestion: he come on here. There are tons of people who know exactly what they're talking about-- some are even recruiters/Navy personnel themselves.

And yes, the recruiters generally feed them a bunch of lies about how it's easier to get married after bootcamp. It's not. It's much more beneficial to marry before-- but it makes more paperwork for the recruiter.

I know Andi.  If I remember right, I think he paid $25 or $30 for the taxi ride.  I think the total bill was $22 and each of them pitched in like $20-$30, so that taxi driver got a great tip.

Penny, those brand new Honda Civics are "sweet".  I'm sure those guys were whistling at him.   At least he'll have a good year and a few months to drive it before he has to store it.  Maybe he can let you drive it for him :)

Emily, Wow, his Recruiting Officers told him that the Navy wouldn't pay to move her until he was out of Prototype School and at his first Station.  Then, they would pay from then on.  Perhaps they were trying to discourage him from getting married.  They married last month.  Would be amazing if they would pay to move her after bootcamp.  Assuming he will find this all out at bootcamp, or A school?  Don't want to get their hopes up.

Bandito's Mom- Everything Amanda said is completely right. Aaron wishes that I could be there, and I wish I could be there after his long days to make him a nice meal and relax with a movie with him. Since they're married (or at least that's what I'm assuming), the Navy will pay to move her to SC. And if they do it themselves, he can fly home before he starts A school and help her move everything back. They Navy will pay for it, and a lot of times people actually pocket money after the move! And if he doesn't make it, the Navy will pay to relocate both of them as long as they're married. :)
As far as when he should move her- the Navy will give him time before A school starts. Typical schedule: he would fly from RTC on Saturday morning, start briefs on Monday, pick out a house, sign a lease, and then fly back to get her Wednesday. From the sounds of it, he probably wouldn't start class for 2 or 3 (or more) weeks anyways, so there's plenty of time. :) The amount of time he gets to move her depends on where they're moving from. :) I think I've heard 10 days or 2 weeks for the people from Cali. Pleeeeenty of time. They make it so they have enough time to get there with only driving like 6 or 8 hours a day, and no driving in the dark or something like that. And they're supposed to stop every 2 hours-- although they don't have to. :)

Learned that my son is the proud owner of a brand new Honda Civic.  Obviously, his very first brand new car but it is his 2nd Honda.  Apparently as he drove it onto base other Nukes were whistling at him !!!  lol

Just dropping in to introduce myself, my son is PIR 6/3, then headed to GC as EM. Will be watching and reading posts here to keep my sanity! Although I did the Navy for 20 years as a wife it is completely different sending off my youngest child.

I spoke with my son yesterday he said they have no A school classes today for Memorial Day, but he had watch yesterday and quals he needed to pass so he was working on it yesterday.  He is more than halfway through A school at this point, has a little more than two months left.  So they were busy this holiday weekend.  He drove some kids to the airport who had weekend liberty.
