I tried to get Aaron to check them out.. I think I convinced him to watch the 5 minute clip about the nuclear reactor.. That was about it. haha. And they cover everyyyything on that show from missing sailors to relationships on board to the food to port calls to religious services. I became addicted quickly. :)

Thanks! I'll have to check that out for sure! I'm such a sucker for the "what it's like" videos, even though i know a few are just promo stuff. Maybe I can get Jacob to watch them with me...

Oh, and I've even heard of circumstances that when they pull into a safe port, wives can fly there and meet the boat while they're in port. Spend the weekend with them before they go back out to sea. :)

Not sure on how often they're in port. :/ I know more about boomer subs than anything since that's what the big brother is on... I do know communication on carriers is much, much, MUCH better than on subs. I highly recommend checking out the series "Carrier" that PBS did. It's filmed on the USS Ronald Regan. They're hour long episodes, but they give you a pretty clear idea of what life is really like on carriers.  http://www.pbs.org/weta/carrier/

You can watch all the episodes on that site. :) There's even a certain section that the crew talks about the Nukes on board and how you never really see them or know what goes on in the reactor plant. :)

emily- do you know how often carriers are at ports? I never really thought about communication stuff on carriers yet.

kate- Once your finds out which boat (ship, sub, whatever!!) he'll be on, look for that group. I'm sure you'll find plenty of Nuke parents (or SOs) in that group. :) If he's on a carrier, you'll have much more communication than if he's on a sub. (guess from the Japan duty station I'm going with he's on a carrier). He'll be allowed phone calls, emails, and when in port will even have access to video chat programs such as Skype! You'll be able to send packages and letters, too! On subs they can only receive emails, and the occasional letter and small package when they have "drops" scheduled.

Get involved with the ship's ombudsmen before he goes out to sea! My brother is on a sub, and the ombudsmen is her lifeline to knowing everything that's going on with the boat! They're the one that makes sure she's aware of when they leave, come home, etc. :)

Dan's mom, My son is not missing the weather in IL. He's always hated snow. I spoke with him last night...said it was 70 degrees the other day. He loves the weather in Charleston. It's just a matter of time before the "golf bug" hits him. He classed up the beginning of Jan...currently 6th in his class. He's been studying quite a bit this week, preparing for his BE2 test tomorrow. Too bad he didn't spend any time studying or doing homework when he was in college...sigh.

Laurie, I swear one of the big reasons why my son wants to be on a sub rather than a ship is that he heard the food is better on the subs (not as many people).  I THINK he was just kidding when he said that, but who knows?

GulfCoast mom - congrats to all of you! another stage of the journey completed.
