EMC(SS), First of all, thank you for your service. Also thank you for taking the time to come to N4M's and adding your insight and information.

Currently there is an additional potential hold period due to a combination of planned maintenance and some issues at prototype that we are playing catch up from. During this hold period we have been finding special work for the graduated Sailors that are standing by to transfer (volunteering out in town, working with other Navy commands on base and even allowing them to take some condensed college classes through Columbia College of MO. However this is not guaranteed hold period and several Sailors have been very surprised when they thought everyone stays on hold and they were told to be in NY ready for prototype 15 days after graduation. The "normal" process is to send everyone to one of the prototypes for training directly after NPS graduation (literally giving them their orders and saying goodbye to them 30 minutes after they walk across the stage on graduation day). We will get back to this once we clear the backup over the rest of this year or so is the prediction.

Navy policy changed and it is a liberty limit of 350 miles no matter what command you are at without special permission. While at NNPTC they are required to submit a request chit anytime that they are going farther then 75 miles from base.
Comment by Anti M on April 20, 2010 at 8:02pm
They can go 400 miles. I've heard 450, but don't think that is correct. I've also heard they can get the chits for special occasions such as weddings.

All I know is that we expect our son home on or around June 11 or 12th following A School graduation. Then he talked about a T-hold at some point, I believe immediately following his leave. I'm confused too. We're looking forward to having him come home.

He wants to buy a car though and I'm concerned about that as he will be wanting to travel home 6 hours on weekends to see us and his girlfriend. Roundtrip it would be 12 hours over a weekend, and although he's a good driver I worry about the interstate driving. I'm beginning to think that I'll worry about him less when he's deployed on a submarine! (I said this to Colleen, MomofJustin)

Does anyone know the distance allowance they have to travel? Also if they can get a chit to travel farther would it be anytime they want one? I'm hoping that he won't be allowed to travel like that often. It's just not something you want your 19 year old doing on a frequent basis.

Thanks everyone... trying to navigate gets difficult- there is so much information, and I am trying to get into one or two groups that I can learn from and share if need be. My son is a MM I think and he graduates 4/30 from Great Lakes. I don't know if he is G-N-G or if he will be around the whole weekend- does anyone know when we get the letter about PIR? I have reservations and am hoping he is graduating on time. As for "geekiness" Mike is definitely not in the traditional snse of the word, but he does have his geeky side. He is also an athlete and majored in government in college. Not sure how he'll do in Nuke school but he is very excited about it for sure!

Hi Nuke Moms, Logan is now in Goose Creek waiting for A school to start. I believe that will be May 6 or 8th. I will be going over all your postings but will probably have some additional questions. Hope all is going well for everyone and looking forward to getting to know you fellow Nuke moms.
