My parents are going through Charleston as well. My son was told he can only ride in a car driven by immediate family members. Unfortunately grandparents do not qualify. If he wanted to go somewhere with them, they would have to take a cab.

Thank you Mark. When I get it nailed down I will post it here.

Zazzws,
I strongly suspect that your son got some bogus information. It would certainly be a major change from the way enlistments have historically worked. It really just doesn't make sense either, partly because it would be fundamentally dishonest, and as inexplicable as some things seem in the military, it really doesn't work that way. Also, they take their official oath of enlistment for entry before departing (or maybe upon arrival) for Great Lakes. If they took another oath of enlistment prior to starting "A" school, I'd be concerned. The military can extend an enlistment at the end, but this is hardly ever done in the Navy, though it has happened to some Marines and Army deployed in Iraq.

Thank you so much for the information! My sailor went to the mall and bought a disposable cell phone with 300 minutes. It should last him till he gets his real cell phone in the mail. He told me that USPS takes a week longer than FedEx.
He also said that day one of his six year enlistment is the first day of "A" school. Not day one of boot camp. That was interesting. The best guess he has for "A" school starting is 2 or 3 weeks. I will send him some books to read.

the only reason our sailor is at Groton after Goose Creek, is because he is also in the welding program. The class there is supposed to be 3 months long.

Question: If a nuke is assigned submarine duty, do they have to go through submarine school in Groton?
Comment by Anti M on March 27, 2010 at 12:55pm
Bed? Rack on a ship or a bed in a barracks? He may not be allowed to use it, so someone has to ask him. Usually, no drop over is allowed, hospital corners are the norm. On a ship, personal bedding can be considered a fire hazard and some don't allow it. In a barracks room, they all have different regulations. So some do, some don't allow the use of personal bedding. But it almost always has to be tucked in or put away during the day.

Navy/Army Mom.....Wow, what beautiful words!!! You have a talent, this one is a keeper. I write poetry and not everyone can write like this. If you don't mind I am going to write this down for my son and hang on to it. Tears to the eyes it did bring, but I thank you for being here, when my thoughts I need to share.
