DebbieinCA and Annette--Thanks for the encouraging comments. I've cherished the letters and phone calls from Kellam, he's so expressive and emotional in them. I hate to think that 15-minute phone call is the last one until "I'm a sailor"!
Hi TinaG !--Nice to meet another Florida mom, with 2 navy sons even. How long have they been in?
DarlainVA--Small world isn't it?! Interesting that you have so much family here in gville. Do you get to visit often? Any idea who the Kellam is that your son's high school is named after?

Hi Cherise,
Welcome. Congratulations on your first phone call from BC! It made my whole week when I got that first call. You should start getting much more regular letters now. Most people got one or two a week after the first 3 weeks of bootcamp.

Hello, I'm Cherise and I live in Florida. My son Kellam is in bootcamp, PIR 4-2-10, and is scheduled for nuke school in Charleston after graduation. Anybody else from Florida? We received our second letter from him today, and had our first "real" phone call yesterday. Funny how the most insignificant and trivial things take on new meaning when your son is at bc and there's no communication.

Gail M. My son arrived in GC on Feb 15 and is a newbee that is with a Power school roommate. I don't know though if he is still in Power school or has just graduated. Either way my son is happy to be there and to be with someone that knows what is going on.

MMs are machinist mates. They also handle any welding that needs to be done while they are at sea. Welding school is a prime school for MMs and they all try for it. They handle a lot of piping and machinery in the engineering spaces.

Darla- Thank you for all that info!
I may send Sean a box of school supplies while he's still in indoc since he would have to go off base to get them and doesn't have his car. I'll look into the Villas and the Hampton Inn for my visit, hopefully in March.
Annette- Congratulations on the phone call!!! Isn't it wonderfully calming to get to hear your boy's voice? ;^) My son is an MM, but the just got to Goose Creek, PIR 2/19/10. I'll let you know stuff as I find out.

Hi all,
My son will be going to nuke A school after boot camp. so I was wondering, can he have his truck, laptop, zune, phone and t.v.? When he graduates in April we were trying to figure out if we should drive his truck with all his stuff to south carolina. Any help with this would be appreciated. =) thank you

Pam, It happens all the time. If a sailor needs to finish his quals so he can get his Fish, they will temporarily transfer him to another sub. It just means he needs to get some things signed off that can only be done while a sub is at sea. Its called a ride along. Once he gets what he needs he will go back to his own Sub. Hope this helps.

My son, Phillip just arrived in Goose Creek a couple of days ago and wants me to bring his electronics etc. Does anyone have a suggestion on where to stay? I was hoping there was a Navy Lodge - but they closed it down awhile back.
