to EM moms - my son is EM now in prototype in Goose Creek. He should be driving home today (12 hours) on his first 4 day break from the 35 day rotation of three different shifts (new girlfriend in the picture here - at least I'll get to see him a little). He graduated with distinction from power school on June 5th, had a two week leave and started back to prototype school. He is scheduled to graduate from prototype Dec 11th, then a 30 day leave before he goes to his first assignment. He had also chosen subs, with King's Bay, Ga being his first choice due to the type of sub there. That is about all I know - they should know the last part of November where they will be stationed. Tell your sailors to hang in there,

I didn't know about this site when my son went to Nuke Power School, Prototype and Sub school. He made light of all the graduations. We would have gone to Charleston, Ballston Spa and Groton if he had said anything that indicated that we should have been there. Looking back, I wished my husband and I had gone to everything. Some of these guys are sooooo tight lip about everything. Thank God we made it to OCS graduation.

Daltons Mother and other mother of son thinking about going NUKE,
My son is 25. He joined the Navy after graduating from college with a degree in electrical engineering. He is a nuke officer on a sub. He treats the younger enlisted guys in his group like little brothers. A multiple-sport athlete in high school, his coaches and the parents of teammates loved him because he took really good care of the younger kids on the team. He is strict but very fair. He leads by example. He takes his responsibility seriously. He says the hardest part is when one of the guys get a "Dear John" letter from home. I believe your son will be fine because there will be junior officers like my son who will take good care of him (as long as your son works hard and tries to do his best). My son would probably suggest your son should think seriously about going nuke and sub before making the commitment.
From a parents' perspective, your son will get great training in a field with wonderful career opportunities. We know a young man who enlisted at 18, he has been in for 10 years. He was a nuke on a carrier. He got his BS in engineering. Later he was accepted into Officer Candidate School and became an officer. He is currently getting a MBA from a very prestigious university. If he leave the Navy after 20 years, he will have incredible job offers. Your son has to decide how ambitious he is.

Denise, Big Congratulations to your son! He has a tough set of schools ahead of him but I have no doubt that he'll do great. My husband was one of Rickover's Boys. His interview was with Adm Hyman Rickover back in the day of the dinosaurs. Your son has a wonderful career ahead of him. Has he decided on surface line or Subs?

My nephew is an EM3. Tell you what, EM is a great rate, but as an ex-ET (hubby too) we were a bit disappointed it didn't become a family tradition, LOL.

Lyn, I shouldn't complain about the sharing. We do actually have more conversations than pre-Navy. And his dad and I got a kick out of a call several weeks ago when he commented, "I never thought I'd enjoy talking to my parents." What a hoot. I guess I would like to know more about his perspective of the Navy than he has shared so far.
Judy - loved your comment about your son. I can see it happening that way for my son, too. In fact, my daughter (12 years older than the son in the Navy) said she figures he'll be married to some Navy gal within 2 years. We'll see what kind of surprises he has in store for us. I feel like his life is an adventure -- but the distance is killing me! I'd like to know more about his life. He'll be home in a couple weeks - can't wait!!!!

Probably a combination of the fact that 50% of nuc jobs (billets) are for MMs, and it sounds a little less glamorous to many than the ET, and to some extent, the EM rates. Interestingly though, MMs have much more interesting (and fun) watch stations. ET was my first choice, and I was disappointed not to get it at the time, but I'm glad I was an MM, and an ELT. Lastly, minor color blindness is very common in light-haired white males, and is often identified in screening, but not told to the recruit until during boot camp. Color blindness is disqualifying for EM and ET, but not for MM, unless it's bad enough that they can't be a nuc either.

Lorraine, Share what is Share? He never talked to me before the Navy, now at least he tells me where he is when they get to a port. I almost died of shock the day he said "I Love You Mom" over the phone. His older brother shares even less but he has an excuse he's a CTN (Mark calls them spooks).
Comment by Mark on August 18, 2009 at 10:43pm
cameowlot,
Machinist Mate (MM) is the only rate they will guarantee before boot camp for nukes. Otherwise, they don't find out until sometime (halfway?) in boot camp what their rate will be.
