Maureen, thanks for correcting that. You are of course correct, Saratoga is north of Albany. I lived there for 6 months. Sometimes the brain and the fingers just don't talk to each other.LOL Have a good weekend.

to Cindy and some of the newer moms on here - you can go to nex.com (the Navy Exchange website) and order a gift card to be sent directly to your sailor. It is really kinda neat - you can just send the card or pick from hundreds of greeting cards for about $5. more. You can change the greetings, the color and font of the print, add your own message etc. They can use this card at any of the NEX, but also at the mini NEX, next to the Subway at Goose Creek. The chow hall does close @ 1800, so most keep snacks in their rooms to have after late night study time - or buy an extra sub to have late at night. That subway must be the top money maker in the US!! Anyway, I had fun looking thru the cards and sending to my son - there are thinking of you, encouragement, welcome to you new home (I sent one of these once I had his address after PIR - he then had some mad money to go to the NEX and pick out some snacks or things he needed for his room - ironing board, iron, etc. We watched several sailors carrying ironing boards (and 12 packs or energy drinks) from the mini NEX while waiting to pick up our son while we were there the few days before power school grad. Just another idea to send a little surprise - I also sent the Subway gift cards, but this way they have a little more flexibility of what they can buy.

Yes, Balston Spa is in NY. It is just outside of the city of Saratoga Springs, which is south of the state capital of Albany. Most of the guys live in the Saratoga area. It is incredibly beautiful in the summer and fall.

Gini, My sailor graduates from Power School on Nov. 20 and is going to request Ballston Spa. Thank you very much for the offer and I will definitely keep it in mind. Pat

See there is a restaurant question. If they can get to East Bay Deli--it's pricey but oh so good. Great huge sandwiches, soups and salads.

Our sailor is in prototype and has had the upper respiratory yuckies too.

I would also have him/her check with the Morale, Welfare and Recreation Office (MWR) they have the inside information on discounts for all sorts of things including travel.
Comment by LLovesmysailor on September 3, 2009 at 5:00pm
There are military discounts they are just not advertised. They have to call the individual airlines to book their flights. Have him check with one of the Chiefs, they know all that stuff.

Laurie, my son got married after power school. Dress blues are fine.

Lorraine, my son has same, the place where he gets the cash charges and his bank charges also. He is aware and only gets cash when he needs and takes larger amounts (not just a 20 or so), cash back at a purchase would be better. My son has finially learned after bouncing a few checks at $29.00 each. It's a painful learning experience but they have to learn it. All my "lectures" didn't seem to make a difference, but losing chunks of money by being stupid finialy did. We moms want to prevent these 'hard lessons' but I'm sure I didn't heed most of my mother's 'lectures' and had to learn the hard way. BUMMER

My son uses Bank of America for his main account and it's the one his pay goes in. I've noticed he gets hit with a $2 ATM charge for using the NFCU ATMs. Does anyone know of any other ATMs on base at GC that don't charge to withdraw money? I just hate to see him throw away $2 several times a month. I've tried to address his habits and how he uses his money, but he's still pretty green when it comes to his spending habits. He has a debit card so would it be better to encourage him to get cash back when he makes a purchase?
