Mail and packages ALL go to the mailroom, not to the individual sailor. So if you are sending things, use priority, because overnight may get to the mailroom overnight, but NOT to your sailor that day. They get a notice and have to go get their package. Do not mail things priority or express on Thursday ~ Saturday and expect the kids to get it quickly. It will sit in the mailroom over the weekend.

Never subscribe to magazines for them, they simply will not get them. Has to do with class numbers according to my nephew.

I sent my son's laptop to GC by Postal Express Mail (which is 2 day from my location but overnight from many areas) because it gets good handling and is quite safe (includes $100 insurance and you can pay for more). Also with Express Mail you can waive the signature so that is not a problem. I also have very good luck with postal Priority mail and you can insure up to $200 without anyone having to sign for it (it just gets a delivery scan). Priority mail also has 4 flat rate boxes which are great for goody boxes and save money if you are several zones away from GC.

Traci--those things we shipped UPS insured. They got to our nuke just fine. We went with what we felt would give the better insurance for the weight of everything.

Jim--due to OSPEC we cannot comment on anything about Ballston Spa. Just tell the mother to pray and be encouraging.

Laurie, my son is in class 0931A and he thought he wanted his car. Now he has a bicycle so he can get around on base easier and he doesn't think he wants his car at all while at GC. Isn't it great when they start growing up and looking at things differently? Of course, when I quoted what his car insurance would be monthly, that might have had something to do with his decision! :-)

Cynthia, I don't know where your son is for Prototype. When Alex graduated from NY there wasn't a ceremony. They just handed him his orders and the guys left for their duty stations. In Alex's case he went on leave for a few weeks. We helped him move out of his rental house but there wasn't a graduation to attend. I don't know if its the same in GC.

Tomorrow is first day of prototype for the guys and gals that graduated power school June 5 and are staying in GC. We attended the graduation and brought our sone home with us. He bought a car while here and went back Thurs. Was excited because his tag was only $24.00 in SC. If he had gotten it here (in MS) the tag would have been $300. plus he would have had to pay tax on the vehicle. Spoke to him today - he has driven to the Weapons Station and around it - found building where he needs to be in the am. Guess he is growing up - in the past he would have waited until the morning and then tried to figure out where to go. He is excited about this last phase - has done well so far so am keeping my fingers crossed. Good luck to all who start school tomorrow and hope everyone had a nice visit!!

Jana, Wendy's right, those blogs are full of great information. It won't be long until your son will find out that there is no such thing as "hit the ground running" in the Nuke power program. Its more along the lines of "hurry up and wait." So you might want to be prepared for a certain amount of complaining from your son. I'll keep my fingers crossed that he gets to do some "running" real soon.LOL

Mary, I sent my son a box of candy the day before Halloween. The Navy delivered it to him in February. We still can't figure out where that box spent all those months.

jana, Congradulations to your son. He'll be in INDOC for a while until his school starts. The good news is that you will hear from him more often. He will probably want civilian sheets and some other comforts. I'm sure he'll let you know what he needs or wants.
